Default Any Laptop input?

I'm a PC guy, so I've come to trust certain products and have been building my own computers for about 10 yrs now. Well it's time to hand over this beast I'm currently on, to my kids and get a laptop.

I can't build them!

What do people suggest for manufacturers? My budget is around $1100 bucks, and it isn't meant to be a savage gaming machine.

Is Dell the way to go?

I wouldn't recommend going with Dell....if you are planning to spend $1k plus dell haves been know to have a lot hardware and BOS even with Vista.....

Are you looking with sometime with Big HDD, 4 GB memory, and something with big screen like 16.4".......

you could find a lot nice laptop for under 1k....I just got a Asus about month ago and just love and I install window 7 x64 and it running much better then Vista Home version.....

I like HP/Compaq, Asus and Lenovo

Now don't discount a Macbook - you can dual boot on them and run XP or Vista - plus the software that comes with it for being creative is really nice - they are just too damned overpriced

I would stay away from Toshiba at all costs (I've heard 2 too many horror stories) and Dell (for their horrible off-short cust. service) and Gateway (seems to be low rent anymore)
