Cool Blu-ray Source I Was Surprised To Notice Color-banding In at 1080p

Hey folks,

Been noticing even though everything is correctly calibrated that even some Blu-ray movies and other Blu source material (like commercials in 1080p) seems to show up with Color-banding in them at 1080p. In an attempt to identify moments when the Color-banding is actually in the source -- and not a result of your HDTV, other display, or Blu-ray Player -- I thought we could document here some movie moments when Color-banding actually seems to be in the Blu-ray source itself!

I will post some examples later, but please let us all know if you've also encountered this, and at what point in a movie or other Blu-ray source. Feel free to note what Blu-ray player and HDTV you have as well.

TIA!

Obliviously not every transfer is perfect, this is really nothing new or noteworthy.

Understood.

Just wanted to offer a way to identify source that we can confirm has Color-banding in the source itself to help others realize that what they are seeing is not a problem with their HDTV, display, or Blu-ray player.

For example, when you are looking at a blue sky, but you can see "bands" of blue instead of one solid color.

There are some nighttime shots in My Name is Bruce that are just ridiculous.

But many times it is a problem with their TV, display settings or player. You're gonna get a lot of people complaining about titles when it could simply be their setup that's to blame, and they don't know the difference.

We can credit or discredit the reports by trying it out ourselves, and posting replies in agreement or disagreement.

It'll be fun -- and informative

The shot of the sun in Planet Earth was famous for posterization.

Also a couple shots on The Fountain were pretty bad:

Any other color-banding examples in the source itself to report?

One obvious scene to me was in I Am Legend, when Will Smith is running through the dark building, looking for his dog, after chasing the deer inside. He has the flashlight on his weapon, and there's a really bad banded halo around his head.

I hope this thread becomes a useful resource for people to identify movie scenes on Blu that are known to have Color-banding. That is, so we don't go nuts trying to compensate for something that is in the source, and can not be fixed by adjusting display and/or player settings.

If a moderator is watching...perhaps the title could be changed to:

"Don't Adjust Your Set - This Blu Has Known Moments of Color-Banding"

or

"Do Not Be Alarmed! This Blu Has Known Moments of Color-Banding"

Thanks!

Keep the posts coming
