Arrow Daredevil Reboot

Daredevil Reboot February 14, 2013

Daredevil.jpg

IN Variety's article about the Ghost Rider reboot, they mention FOX is indeed working on a new version of the man without fear and the Surfer as well.

The question is, who will be Daredevil? Who would you like to see play Matt Murdock?

The Marvel universe is going to be a very busy place for the next few years.

Columbia Pictures is the latest studio to rev up a Marvel project on the heels of Disney's pact to acquire Marvel Entertainment in a $4 billion deal.

Col is working on a second installment of "Ghost Rider," with David Goyer in early talks to create the story and supervise writers for a film expected to once again star Nicolas Cage. Former Marvel topper Avi Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul are producing, with Gary Foster as exec producer.

The "Ghost Rider" push comes amid a flurry of activity with Marvel characters at Sony, Fox, Universal and Paramount. The movement is necessary for those studios to retain rights to their respective Marvel superheroes. If the properties languish, the rights can be reclaimed by Marvel Entertainment, which is what happened with such properties as Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Iron Man. Iron Man was gathering dust at New Line for some time before Marvel turned the property into a self-financed blockbuster last year.

Fox is rebooting "Fantastic Four" with "Green Lantern" scribe Michael Green and producer Akiva Goldsman; mobilizing a "Wolverine" sequel and several "X-Men" spinoffs; quietly developing a new version of "Daredevil"; and working on a Silver Surfer film.

Sony recently set James Vanderbilt to write the fifth and sixth installments in the "Spider-Man" series, and Universal continues work on "Sub-Mariner." Par continues as distributor for "Iron Man 2," and other Marvel superhero pics at the studio are expected to include "Thor" and "Captain America."

Through a spokesman, Goyer said he hadn't signed on to a second "Ghost Rider" yet. But plans are already under way to base the sequel on a "Ghost Rider" script written years ago by Goyer, whose superhero work includes hit screen transfers of DC's "Batman Begins" and Marvel's "Blade" franchise. The original "Ghost Rider" was scripted by director Mark Steven Johnson.

Arad told Daily Variety that Hollywood's unquenchable interest in Marvel properties and the price tag that the company is fetching from Disney is a validation of the strategy that he and Ike Perlmutter executed at Marvel starting in the early 1990s. Arad ran Marvel from 1993 through 2007, when he left to start a film company with son Ari just after Marvel locked in a $525 million credit facility.

Arad said he left because he was exhausted and because he was convinced that his No. 2, Kevin Feige, was ready to take over. Arad's confidence in Feige is reinforced by the fact that the exec has emerged as a possible replacement for Disney film topper Dick Cook after making a strong impression on Disney topper Bob Iger during the acquisition negotiations that concluded in late August (Daily Variety, Sept. 1).

Arad said the current demand for Marvel properties stands in sharp contrast to the company's fortunes in the late 1990s, when it was in bankruptcy and Arad and Perlmutter persuaded creditors to spurn an offer of $350 million in cash from Carl Icahn. Arad was convinced at the time that "Spider-Man" alone could be turned into a billion-dollar movie enterprise. Since that time, "X-Men" and "Blade" have also joined the billion-dollar B.O. club, and "Iron Man" is well on its way.

Arad mentioned Dr. Strange, Nick Fury, Power Pack, Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers as prime movie properties.

"I had this poster of the Marvel universe, with these beautifully drawn characters, and we used to say you could throw a dart, hit a character and make a hit movie under the Marvel brand," Arad said. "There is a long list yet to be unleashed. I think this will look like a smart deal over time because Disney is a company that knows how to exploit a brand."

Arad is separately developing a slate that includes the Catherine Hardwicke-directed adaptation of the James Patterson book series "Maximum Ride" at Columbia and "Ghost in the Shell" for DreamWorks. Arad has also secured rights to make a CG-animated feature based on the venerable strongman Popeye.

So Surfer at FOX, Sub-Mariner at Universal. I sure would like to know exactly what the details are and how Marvel could get their properties back.

I really hope that the Dr. Strange gets made. I own, probably, one of the best Dr. Strange comic collections in existence. The first full series (June 1974 - Feb. 1987) of 81 comics in absolute pristine condition, plus all of the earlier appearances...kept in Mylar and boxed in my comic book room. Anytime a movie is made the prices of vintage comics in excellent condition go through the roof . A lot of, now, well off individuals remember their childhood favorite super heroes and a pay premium. BTW bring Conan too!

I believe they would get the rights back only if a new movie at those studios holding the rights does not enter development for a stated period of time. As well as comic books have done in the past few years, do not expect Marvel to ever get those characters back for film properties unless the studio goes bankrupt.

Wow! There are still a lot of comic to film adaptations coming. Bring 'em on!

Of the reboots, I'm glad to see Daredevil and Ghost Rider on there; both films had decent moments but could have been better. For Silver Surfer I hope they let Doug Jones do the voice this time; I didn't think Laurence Fishburne was a good fit but I'm bias toward Doug Jones.

Though in truth, I'd rather wait a few years and let Marvel handle these titles. Since the studios won't allow that to happen, I guess I can try and enjoy these

I liked Daredevil the movie but I think a reboot could also be good for the character.

I am glad to hear about daredevil, but I actually liked the director cut version and thought Ben was good but for a new look I would like either:

Gerard Butler
Colin Farrell

Dam..Marvel characters are busy where the hell is DC...

If Huge Jackman wasn't busy with Wolverine, I think he would make a good Daredevil/Matt Murdock.

As long as Casey Affleck stays on board, then I am good.

The fact that all these movies are a possibility to get made is a very good thing!

Damn it! I want the movie rights back to Marvel already. They proved with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk they do much better movies themselves. And yeah Fox will probably be the only studio that has bought rights off Marvel that will always continue to reboot their movies. They just can't make any good comic book movies they get way too involved.

My favorite Marvel character when done right is Daredevil. The Frank Miller issues 168 thru 181 in particular, but I also love the Reborn batch in the 227 thru 233 issues done by Frank Miller. The Karen Page selling Matt Murdock out for some drugs then the revenge set out by the Kingpin was simply awesome. The end of the first issue of that series was priceless. Matt Murdock not know why his life is falling apartas Kingpin systematically rips it apart without ever laying a hand on him mind you, and goes man what a long day I just want to get to bed, then BLAM his apartment blows up right in front of him all in one issue he loses nearly everything.WOW!!!!!!! What the first movie failed to get was the raw human emotion and conflict between Elektra, Daredevil, Kingpin, and Ben Urich. The scene in the issue where Daredevil is spinning the Kingpins wife's locket in the Kingpins Penthouse was phenomenal. Nothing said in that panel yet you could feel the tension and emotion thru and thru. The conflict between these characters had deep emotion. They were all torn in one way or another. My point is if they reboot him it matters less who plays Daredevil or even the Costume, but more of that they capture the true essence of all the players involved to truly tell the story right.

Yes i agree, my problem is that i have the first 2 movies on blu-ray and when they reboot the franchise the original 2 movies will seem obsolete.
