Getting the Sony STR 5400ES receiver for $400 is incredible. Are you sure it didn't fall off the back of a truck?

No it's not of a truck lol I'm a sony employee I login the website today and saw the price I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that price I have no idea why it's that cheap but best buy has the pioneer sc 05 for $749 and I had my heart set on that one for a while but his price is hard to pass up if you know what I mean.

I would still get the SC-05. Remember this is an investment of your enjoyment. Which one do you think will perform better, regardless of price, because they are both great deals.

IMO, the Pioneer is an excellent AVR, as I have an SC-05. However, at $400 for the Sony, that is just ridiculous. It would be worth a $400 investment for that particular receiver based at that price point if you ask me!

I'd get the Sony for that price, IF it has pre-outs and add a seperate power amp for the difference in price.

I totally agree, the MSRP for that thing is around $1,500, so for $400, you just can't pass that up. I appreciate the OP's luv for the SC-05 though!

John
It does have pre-outs all Sony ES models do.

OP, the Sony are fantastic receivers, my dad uses an older model, I think the 5200ES and it powers his B&W speakers just great. I don't think you would be disappointed with the receiver in any way.

I say get the Sony. Even if you don't want to use it you could probably sell it on Audiogon for a profit.
