Default Carpet or Hardwood?

I'm getting a new room and I was wondering what would be better, hardwood, or carpeted. What is better?

Carpet.

'Tis better to absorb the waves than reflect them.

my advice after buying new home with hardwood...if you have dogs, maybe not a great idea, my dog has scratched mine pretty good. I have real hardwood, laminate wood might be a different story.

But as far as sound goes, you can always buy a large area rug to absorb and not reflect the sound. I have a large rug on my floors, I think sound is fine.

Carpet would probably be better, but if you do go with hardwood, you might want to try a nice big area rug in front of the main speakers.

Hmm, carpet seems to be better. :P

I think I'm gonna go with the hardwood, but I'll just get a carpet to lay over it.

decent choice. I didn't have a choice, but have placed rugs around to absorb the reflections, and it's sounding pretty good. Check my gallery for example. I think FORCE is the only one pissed that I'm covering my floor up.

+1. I have three dogs, and flooring can be an issue. My previous place was a brand new townhouse, and I had laminate wood floors throughout the main level. With the dogs and kid, not a single scratch was left on the floors three years later when we moved to the current house. The current house was brand new with wood floors throughout most of the main floor. While being scratch resistant, they're nowhere near as tough as the laminate floors. There's a ton of scratches from the dogs on the wood floor now.

I would say carpet for the sound absorption, but I'm shocked no one has mentioned how a hardwood floor is easier to clean up. I have kids spilling drinks, candy, and popcorn while watching movies. Is this not an issue for you?

Replaced my carpet with hardwood about a month ago. There is no way I will go back to carpet. Looks great, but most important a lot more hygienic.

+1. I've got tile with area rugs in a few places. I was having such a hard time keeping the carpet looking nice and clean.

Hardwood, based on resale alone. You can always put down some area rugs.

Hardwood, because carpet is 70's. Oh you mean for the home theater.

It's been said but CARPET or hardwood with RUGS. Highs will reflect off the hardwood and create a bit of distortion in the overall sound - some ears notice this more than others. Mine get particularly annoyed by it.

Carpet is better for the feet especially in the colder months and hardwood is noisy, at least at my house.

I'm currently remodeling my mini theater room that had carpet over hardwood.. ripped the carpet out and wow what a difference in sound. sounds hollow like a church or something. No way im going to leav it like this, gotta get a rug.
