Default PS3 + Audio Setup needs help

Here is my set up

PS3 160GB version (set to Linear PCM on both options) connected directly to T.V. via HDMI. TOSlink cable from PS3 to Reciever, and 2 floor standing speakers.

Should i unhook the TOSlink and just have my PS3 plug directly to the Reciever and have another HDMI cable from the receiver to the T.V.?

Would i lose quality in video from not having the T.V. going straight to the PS3?

And would i keep it at LinearPCM or change to bitstream in the options?

I hope i didnt confuse anyone, because I'm pretty much confusing myself.

No you'll get the same PQ if you run HDMI from PS3 to receiver, and then receiver to TV. That's the way most people have theirs set up, unless their receiver needs to transmit audio with an Optical cable

But if yours supports HDMI then go for it. As for the audio, keep it at LPCM. The older PS3's can't bitstream HD audio (I think PS3 slims can) but you can through LPCM. I'm not an audio pro, so maybe one of the more knowledgeable people can chime in

exactly

toslink can only support dolby digital & reg dts

here is how you have to connect it

1st get rid of the toslink completly...

connect ps3 hdmi output to receiver hdmi input

receiver hdmi output to tv hdmi unput

then your receiver will use all the LOSSLESS AUDIO (dts ma & dolby true hd) and send the video to the tv.

put the HDMI AUDIO OUTPUT as LINEAR PCM in the ps3 settings

what kind of receiver/equipment do you have?

No problem man, and yeah that's where I'll let someone else take over haha. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Optical doesn't support that. What's your receiver model and does it decode HD audio? And is it pass through only, is that why you're using Optical?

Im not at my house ATM, but I know for a fact that it has 1HDMI input, 4 HDMI output and can decode Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD MasterAudio. I recently purchased this a few months ago so its pretty new.

Yeah, do what he said! I have a "fat" PS3 hooked up this way and it rocks!

OP - is your 160 GB PS3 a "fat" or "slim" model? If it is the slim you can set your HDMI Audio Output to either PCM or Bitstream to get lossless. If it is fat you'll need to keep it as PCM.

no worries
only difference is when its DTS MA or DOLBY TRUE HD instead of seeing your receiver say those words, it will say MULTICHANNEL

get rid of the toslink cable for your ps3 connection....use it for your cable/satellite box as the cable/sat box cant do lossless audio.
