I'm pretty new to Blu-Ray (European, you see). Could someone tell me if any (or could any) BD movies suffer from a 'Dual Layer Pause'? Or is the picture always confined to one layer of a Dual Layer disc? It is something that always bugged me on DVD. Cheers.

You know to be honest, I haven't noticed it on my BD's. I noticed it on DVD, and it drove me nuts also.......but I guess it don't do it on BD, i'll have to be more aware as I'm watching my movies I guess!

Welcome to the forum! Many questions you will come up with have probably been answered, so be sure to use the search function on the forums page. A quick search for your exact thread title gave me this: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...al+layer+pause
In short, nope, it doesn't happen on BD. |

I haven't noticed a layer change on any of my discs. I was laughing to myself watching Gone In 60 Seconds the other day because I always remembered exactly where the layer change was on the DVD, and it didn't hiccup on the Blu-ray. I don't know why, but I was immensely satisfied by this.

Same here. I'd always call it out on the DVDs but so far the transition seems perfect on my 50GB BDs.

I completely forgot about dual layer pause since transitioning to blu-ray. The first time i noticed a dual pause on DVD was LA Confidential because it happened in the middle of a scene with Kevin Spacey. Most DVDs after that happened at a scene cut. I cant wait to see LA Confidential on blu-ray. That should be fun.

Yeah, like I said, HD-DVD doesn't seem to be able to buffer the pause for some reason. Sometimes I'll even be watching and due to the layer change, there will be a pause and then speed up for like 3 seconds and then play normal (or else the audio will be out of sync).

DVD spec mandates a visible pause at the layer change. I guess we can thank Toshiba for that one too. Buffering is used in the players to try to minimize or eliminate it. Sony authored their superbit dvds to play without pausing, violating DVD spec, but who cares. It was a dumb idea in the first place. Both BD and HD DVD are designed for seamless layer transition in the software themselves. Of course that doesn't mean their can't be snags. I've never had a layer change hiccup with BD. And while I've had numerous playback problems with HD DVD, none have been attributed to the layer transition.
