The Godfather Sapphire Series Blu-ray News
The Godfather Sapphire Edition Blu-ray
The Godfather Sapphire Edition Blu-ray Review
(Coming Soon)

Quote:
Posted November 4, 2009 07:58 AM by Josh Dreuth

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that the next two titles in their Sapphire Series Blu-ray releases will be individual releases of 'The Godfather: Part II - Sapphire Series'. Original only available as part of the 'The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration', the discs will be identical to those original releases.

Notably missing from the announcement is individual releases for 'The Godfather: Part III' and the fourth disc from the set which features a ton of bonus material. Many collectors were waiting for individual releases due to the inclusion of 'The Godfather: Part III' in the original set, which is generally seen as the weakest of the three films.

Both 'The Godfather' and 'The Godfather: Part II' Sapphire Series Blu-ray individual releases will be released on February 2nd.

Already have the trilogy. Glad that these are the same, so there will be no temptation to double dip...

The restoration on this film is immaculate. A must own for any movie collector.

Meh....I'll just pick up the Boxset someday as these are going to be identical releases. It seems to me you can get the trilogy when its on sale for what these would cost to buy together on release day.

I am happy with the set that I have, I don't think the transfer can get any better than what we already. I don't mind have GF3 in my set, I don't think it is that bad.

The box set is the one to have, the documentary included is for everyone, whether they be a major or minor GF fan.

3 may not be as good as 1 or 2, but it's still a great movie. It is worth owning. I don't watch it as much as 1 or 2, but I still watch it at least twice a year. It is a billion times better than a lot of the stuff out there on Blu-ray.

This actually feels like a pretty lazy move. Paramount has so many wonderful titles in their library that they could release under the Sapphire brand, and they chose to go with something that was already released a year ago. Sucks.

The most pointless double dip of all time if you already have the set.

Coppola himself said on the Blu-ray commentary track (I'm paraphrasing): "I never intended the third movie to be called 'Godfather, part 3', and instead 'The Death of Michael Corleone'" and explains how paramount obviously forced his hand, to piggy back on the reputation of the first 2 movies.

So, for those die-hard Coppola fans, they can now get the director-intended series, just parts 1 and 2. I like the 3rd movie, but can see how some dont consider it part of the Godfather series, especially if COppola doesnt.

Personally, I think III is a bit of a turd. I saw it opening weekend and once after. I thought perhaps I wasn't being kind, so I watched it again earlier this year when it was in the theaters and my previous assessment was confirmed.

I would prefer to own just I and II, just as I do on DVD. However, if the box set is only $5 or so more than Parts I and II combined then it's a no-brainer to go with the set.

Why doesn’t Paramount just slap a "Sapphire Series" label on the box set as the individual release discs are identical to the one in the set?

I've had the trilogy for a while now but still haven't watched any of them. What's so bad about the 3rd movie?

I'm not sure I believe that. I'm sure he said it, but it might be a bit of back-pedaling on his part, after how poorly the third movie was received.

Even if he knew it was bad when he was filming it, it may've been a cash-grab on his part, and saying it's not supposed to be part of the Godfather series is just an excuse for why it wasn't that good. He can call it whatever he wants, but people would know it's a sequel to Godfather Part II.

In any case, I don't think it's that bad. It's an average movie, maybe a little better, so it's not a bad movie. It obviously just suffers in comparison to the others.

good points. i'm referring to the audio commentary at the end of either part1 or part 2 (can't remember off hand now). he actually said the third one wasn't to be called "godfather," so its my inference that he wouldn't count it in the "godfather series." i still like part 3 too, a great film IMO!
whether its bad and whether its part of the series may be different issues, or you may be right that coppola is covering his tush. i dont know enough history on it to know more.

Because it didnt win the Oscar for best picture, like the first two did. The Saphire Series is looking like all best picture winners. Or at least thats the case so far.
