Why do some BR disks have a watery look? - Blu-ray Forum

Talking about the physical media here -- ever noticed that some BR discs have a "watery" type of look to them? Actually, it would be better described as a kind of "wet mercury" look to them. It's kind of cool, but I wondered why that is?

My copy of The Prestige is like this. I have other discs like this as well (Maybe 1 in 10 titles are like that), but can't remember which ones. Must be a difference in the manufacturing?

Because that means in 24 hours theyll melt and give up poisonous gases, kill birds, and start to rot

ya in a microwave oven. I have seen what a microwave will do to a CD. Wonder what would happed to a blu-ray?

The first time I noticed this on several of my discs, I kind of freaked out. I thought that they had been melted somewhat, but I guess it is nothing.

I also noticed that Blu-Ray Discs are more shiny then SD-DVD's

That's because the pits are closer together, making making more of a refective surface.

And for the original post, yes I have noticed that. It didn't last long, and it only seems to do it at night.

Your talking about the shimmering effect on some discs right? They have this shimmering efect when data side is held under a light. Some shimer and others don't.

It's a very simple explaination really. The ones that shimmer are Dual Layered and the ones that don't are single layer. You see this by comparing a launch Blu-ray title to a recent title. It's much easier to test with Pirates of the Carabean Blu-ray releases. The movie disc is Dual Layered and Extra disk is single layered. The Movie disk shimmers and the extras disk does not.

Try it. DVDs are also like that too. It's just not as noticeable.

Dude, that's awesome. I don't want to screw up my microwave though, but if you want to try a blu-ray I'll send you another one of my spare demo discs.

Edit: Nevermind, I just noticed you're in Korea. That would cost a fortune to ship. Any Americans care to set a blu-ray on fire?

This is correct. What you are seeing is an interference pattern between the two data layers.
