Default Looking for an External Blu-ray Burner

I want to buy an External Blu-Ray reader/burner for my computer and I assume it's best to have FireWire for my Mac but also i want USB since I'll use it on a Windows machine that has USB only.
I have considered the below drive by OWC which is 12x and $349:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other...g/MRF8BDSD12X/

I have heard of other brands such as Buffalo but are there other drives I should look at instead that may be cheaper or better? Also, is it better to buy my own drive from a company such as Pioneer or Panasonic and then buy a case separately? If so, which is a good drive or case to look for?

A couple specs I would like to have are most of all, a drive that does not need external power but that seems hard to find.

The other is a slim-drive since it's more portable. It seems they are much harder to find and much more pricy though. I'd like it to replace my current slim-drive which is a dvd burner but if can't find a slim version I'd likely keep it to use for when I'm on the go and need an optical drive.

Also, it seems media is coming down in price but since I'm looking for a good price on blu-ray media, what is a good place to buy from?

Thank you for help with the above questions.

Hello Markw. Try this one:

Also try the Lacie brand. It's a bit cheaper at other retailers now then what it says on the website.

I'm thinking of getting

Buffalo's MediaStation 8x External Blu-ray Drive and MediaStation 8x Internal Blu-ray Drive
http://www.officedepot.ca/a/products...ernal-Blu-ray/

and hooking up a new computer with 2tb harddrive
http://www.officedepot.ca/a/products...uo-2000GB-2TB/
and watch blu-ray that way instead of always using my samsung 1400 this way i'll have a hd pvr

This is excellent. I mentioned the Buffalo drive a while back when someone else asked about it. Nice set-up. The most important thing is that 2TB HD. That is 100's of hours of recorded High Definition content, movies, and television show. There is also a way to expand your HD content if you have a HD PVR from say DirectTV, Dish Network, or your local cable provider. If you really want to save some money, then grab a good PCHD TV tuner card and grab that signal for FREE out of the air and record galore. That's unless you want to continue to pay for the more Premium stations you get with your local providers. Oh yes, don't forget we do have a choice of watching HD content through Hulu, Joost, and other HD sites I won't mention at this time. Nice choice though. Peace...

sorry to go off topic Mark...but Im looking into getting a Mac (pc user) mainly for getting into HD video editing and burning. I was told it will be hard to be able to get a blu ray drive if I get the new imac? final cut supports blu ray but can I get a burner, burn them and watch them on my blu ray player?

You're right down my alley BADASS03SVT. Well, I used Final Cut Pro HD and did some editing with it. That and Avid for the PC both have identical menus at times. It's just that Final Cut Pro HD is thousands of dollars more expensive. Anyway, the way we did it was used an external drive to do this. I haven't heard of that being hard to acheive with a new Imac. That would be very interesting though to see why it would be hard to implemant. Apple would really suffer for doing that. It would be a dumb ass move in my honest opinion. We won't know until it is tried on the new Imac. If this is true, then Apple just lost some loyal customers because they have had this proprietary crap going on for years. I'm not saying Apple has no pluses, but that the way it goes in the computer society.
