To upgrade firmware or not to upgrade firmware, that is the question... - Blu-ray Forum

When there's a new firmware upgrade out for your Blu-ray player, do you automatically upgrade or do you only do it if you run into some kind of problem?

In my case, I'm talking the firmware for my Oppo BDP-83 and right now I think I'm two firmware releases behind. Because I've never had any problems playing any discs, I've so far taken the "if it ain't broke" approach...

But I just had a look at the release note for the latest firmware and one of the things it says is: "Improved precision for color space conversion." And while I don't even know what that means, I'm all for making improvements to my player.

But the "if it ain't broke" mantra keeps playing in my head... hence this thread.

So, what do you do?

I have the Oppo and I do upgrade when it's available. I haven't had any problems with playing any type of disc or problems after upgrading but I think (and have been told by experts) that you should keep up to date because blu-rays are always being tinkered with and sooner or later things will change, maybe not this year or next but they will change, even if it is something small, and it's quite possible that something won't play on your Oppo because of not upgrading. What's nice about Oppo is that their firmware upgrades are total, you can install the latest ( I think it's 0925) and it contain everything that needs to be upgraded on the player. No need to go back and do the one at a time. I just downloaded the firmware, burned it to a disc and it installed no problems.

If my player is made by Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony or OPPO, Yes.
If LG or Samsung, I'd wait a few weeks to see if they broke anything before I update.

I have had this player for almost a year, and still run version 1.1 firmware that came right out of the box. I have yet to see any problems with any of the discs I have played. As another poster said, I have a 4GB memory card in the slot, and disable BD-Live as I do not have any need for it. Not sure if that is why I have not encountered any issue, but I absolutely love this player.

Now looking to buy the BD-60 for the den next Friday.

It's better to upgrade when you can than to wait for Saturday night when you want to watch that new movie, but can't because you need a firmware upgrade!

Typically, I don't do firmware updates on my PS3 until I need to do something that requires a new firmware.

I'll keep mine updated because it's not just about running certain discs; the last update for my player greatly increased load times.
