Question Firmware upgrade solutions.

I know little about the PSP but my friend mentioned that some of the games have fw upgrades already built in. If this is the case surely it is possible for the movies to have similar upgrades on the movie disk. Is is a no go or is it possible?

There's only 1 brand of PSP's... and there is a bunch of different blu players out there that don't run on the same firmware. Plus new model's come out all the time so it'd be pretty hard for movie companies to keep up.

I sort of figured that. I do think they need to keep the general public more aware of the need to keep the FW updated. I thought this might have been a solution. It would need all the discs to tbe BD50 to ensure enough space for all the FWs to be included.

There's also the problem of liability. SCE is assuming the risk for allowing software updates on games. I'm not sure that all the hardware manufacturers want to assume the risk of having their updates released on movie discs.

If the replicator gets an update and somehow the data gets corrupted as its being pressed onto the discs, who's at fault? The hardware manufacturer blames the studio... the studio blames the replicator... the replicator blames the manufacturer. Meanwhile, a consumer is stuck with a "bricked" player that no one is willing to help them with.

Question regarding firmware updates in general.
When will we reach the point where all enhancements have been factored into Blu ray players and there is no need for any further firmware updates and the consumer can go out and buy a player that requires no further updates ?
2 years ?
5 years ?

Soon I hope !

I'm not sure we'll EVER reach that point.

WE will likely reach the point where firmware updates are no longer NEEDED in order to play titles, but I think it will be like PCs where manufacturers will still release occaisonal updates for those who want them to improve on speed, etc. for certain titles.

I think you'll find the tech-savvy will continue to want minor updates, even though most people won't bother updating. And that seems fine to me.

Not sure what more they can do since they have inserts in every disc that mention it for the most part. Problem is people donot read it. It is like the old saying "you can lead a person to water but you cannot make them drink."

Actually, it's a horse, not a person, that you lead to water.
