This may be known to many but I don't remember seeing anyone mention it here. After just over 2 years, my Samsung LN-T4053H started clicking and turning on/off multiple times before finally turning on. I researched it and found lots of other people having this problem with their TVs (multiple models, it seems to be those made 2007 and earlier). See here and here and here. The problem is faulty capacitors on the power supply board. Samsung tried to deny the problem, but they finally acknowledged it (see the cnet forum linked above) but only offered to help 50 people. I tried to fix it myself but the solder wouldn't melt easily and I ended up destroying a contact on the board. I just ordered a new board for about $100 and it only takes a screwdriver to install. That's cheaper than a TV repair service but it's still a pain to have to repair a $1500 TV after only 2 years. If I had known I was buying a disposable TV I would have gotten another brand. At least now I have all the supplies to try and fix the replacement board when it fails, unless it has different capacitors. I'll know when it arrives.
I've bought 3 Samsungs of various sizes in the past 2 years and 2 of them have had problems (google 'robot audio' to learn about the other one). Now I'm just waiting for them to fail too. Suffice it to say I'll never buy another Samsung, I don't care how good the picture is. I could rent a TV for less if they only last 2 years. |

Until 2 weeks ago, I would have said the same thing. It's luck of the draw, really. Either you get the bad batch of capacitors or not. But after about 2,000 hours of use (more or less) the bad ones will fail. The model numbers hardest hit seem to be LN-Txxxx and LN-Sxxxx, and some others made around 2005-2007. I've seen complaints from all over the US, the UK, and Australia. It's not like I'm making stuff up, one more link. Until now I've been quite happy with my TV. This is just a real nuisance.

I feel your pain. I had a similar issue with my Sony. I use to work in a manufacturing plant and can tell you that some of the same bad parts go in all TV across the board.
The developing companies try and keep cost down. They give the specs to the manufacture and then the manufacture will procure all parts based on the specs. If price is an issue then the manufacture will find a part that meets specs at the price point set by the developing company. Believe it or not Sony, Samsung, Pionner, and so on don't make the parts in the TV. Many TV's have the same parts from electronic manufactures. They only design the units. There are some company specific parts but not many. There will be bad TV's and electronic devices from all companies. |
