Default Cold Mountain on Blu-ray?

I see that Amazon does not sell new copies of Cold Mountain anymore. What happened there? Has the studio stopping making this? I love this movie and would like to purchase it, any ideas on where to get it?

Who's naked in that movie? Nicole Kidman or Rene Zellweger? Oh wait, isn't Natalie Portman in it as well?

Is the Interweb's only store Amazon?

It is in stock at INetVideo.com for $15.99. Yes, you have to pay for shipping unlike Amazon. At least its available and here is a link.

INetVideo.com is very reliable and this is a good price.

Also available at Barnes and Noble.com for $28.79.

The quality on this disc is good. It's absolutely nothing like Gangs of New York (1st issue).

I’m hoping one day Cold Mountain will be re-released in 4K UHD. The cinematography, musical score, acting, directing and script are all top-notch quality. Just imagine how stunningly beautiful a proper 4K UHD transfer would be of this movie.

Which brings me to say, it would be even better if Cold Mountain was released on a 4K UHD Steelbook as well. Surely, the fans of the movie would love to add a Steelbook to their collections. I’d purchase both the 4K UHD standard and Steelbook versions / packaging of the movie.

To some this may seem highly unlikely, but it could happen. After all, the movies Me Before You and A Few Good Men received a wonderful 4K UHD transfer. In 2015, the Cold Mountain: Motion Picture Soundtrack was released on an 180G 2xLP vinyl for the first time. Many people had doubted the movie soundtrack would ever receive a vinyl release, but thankfully it did. I, alone, bought two copies of the vinyl record. Therefore, anything can happen.

Cold Mountain will always be my all-time favorite movie. I can only hope it receives the love it deserves. Here's to hoping for the best!

Bought the bluray at a Thrift Store for less than $4 and I still feel ripped off. Waste of time and money. Terrible film. Wouldn't surprise me if it got a 4K release since 9/10 films they release on the format are not worth watching let alone owning.

Cold Mountain, like many big films of the early 2000s, was edited digitally at 2K, so I'd think a 4K disc would have to be an upscale. It's actually easier to release older films in 4K because they were edited on film. The early 2000s are a problem period because the films only exist at 2K. You'd have to rescan all the raw footage and recreate every single edit and transition in order to get a higher resolution version, kind of like they did for Star Trek The Next Generation, which was edited on video.

There's a great book Walter Murch wrote about the editing process, he used Final Cut Pro for it, which was revolutionary at the time on a studio film.

I apologize for the delay, I just saw this reply.

That being said, an upscaled 2K release would still be a lot better than the 1080p resolution we have now. I'll take it! : )

As for me and millions of other viewers, we adore the movie. Given how Cold Mountain was nominated for seven Golden Globes (won one) and six Academy Awards (won one), it's a well respected film in the industry.

By you not liking the film, that doesn't reflect on the fact that millions of people do love the movie. You're entitled to your opinion, as are we. Hakuna Matata.

I just went back and re-watched some upscaled UHD transfers for the following: The Lion King, Beauty And The Beast, Toy Story and Underworld.

In my opinion, all of the features listed above are beautifully upscaled and restored. The UHD transfers are miles beyond the Blu-ray releases in sound and picture quality.

After viewing those upscaled movies, I started to think about Cold Mountain once again. If those select movies can be distributed on an upscaled UHD release and still look amazing, Cold Mountain could also receive the same love and treatment from the studio.

Since the movie rights to Cold Mountain have been sold to various companies, does anyone know who I could email/request for a UHD transfer to me made? I'd gladly purchase this movie on UHD twice (both standard and steelbook editions). This is my all-time favorite movie.

It's part of the Miramax catalog, which was recently sold to Paramount. The old Lionsgate BDs of the Miramax titles are all now OOP. No telling if or when Paramount will release them on physical media. Even then, no telling how many will get reissued.

Thank you! I will contact Paramount and request they give love to the movie for a UHD release. It never hurts to ask.

It's been four years since we last discussed this conversation, so I wanted to come back to this topic. As we have seen in recent years, a lot of movies released at the same time as Cold Mountain (i.e. Underworld, Aeon Flux, etc.) have received 4K UHD restorations. Although some movies in that period are not native 4K features, the restorations/upscales look beautifully done. This gives me hope that they could (finally) give Cold Mountain the love it deserves.

If the Underworld franchise (thankfully) can be restored on 4K UHD, Cold Mountain wouldn't be an issue to manage. I have a little over 200 movies I wish could be restored in UHD one day, but Cold Mountain still reigns at the top spot of the most wanted restoration for me. (I love how Nicole Kidman is finally starting to have some of her movies restored in UHD.) Given what we have seen with many caps movies as of late, what do you think now?

Paramount has only released a couple of Miramax/Dimension titles on UHD. I'd love the floodgates to open, they're sitting on tons and tons of Oscar winners and Oscar nominees, but at the moment, there appears to be no movement on titles like Cold Mountain, The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, etc.

Paramount has released a couple of Tarantino titles, and a couple of Dimension titles (like Scream, which was tied into one of the recent sequels). They've also licensed a couple of Dimension titles to KL, like Below and Reindeer Games.

We can only hope they become more receptive to releasing catalog titles or licensing them.

I'm not sure if Paramount actually holds the film materials for those Miramax/Dimension titles, since they own a 49% interest in Miramax, as far as I know, with controlling 51% interest held by beIN Media, a Qatari group.
