According to what Van Ling said on home theatre forums about it getting the 16:9 treatment which seems to me, like they have taken the dodgy master rubbish tape and sprinkled with lame bluray graphics to deluded the rest that don’t know what to look for.
It could be 500GB Bluary and it will still look like rubbish. What they need to do is go back and start all over again from a 35m print and align the video equipment up so that these ghastly looking artefacts don’t even display. You’d never see this in the cinema! But I guess most of you haven’t even been to real cinema in 10 years and have forgotten what the original medium looks like. Here are few region 2 DVD THX screen captures note the yucky green smearing ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the same as the THX laserdisc PAL laserdisc VHS tape. It didn’t show up on channel 4 when I saw it many years ago, and that was analogue TV now then! They used a different print or a different means of presenting it which would put a bluray to shame. The Abyss Titanic Terminator haven’t given it re-spin for months but 99.999% says its there! Terminator 2 Terminator 3 Close Encounters of the third Kind Cape Fear remake True Lies Aliens Star Trek the Motion Picture Dante’s Peak Poltergeist Oh, I can list a whole bundle and it’s a costly deal now to fix this image technical issue. Star Trek (2009) doesn’t have this nonsense on the Bluray and I’m sure even the DVD is free from this rubbish as well. I have seen dodgy videos of Star Trek on the internet that had (green smearing) as well as reporting the video to FACT because its against the law to steal films! So, there it is. Poor transference will result in poor looking DVD/Bluray. Last edited by JBL4645; 12-12-2009 at 08:31 AM. |

Yeah but I guess you don’t know what to even start looking for. Have fun with some of the poor Bluray and DVD and laserdisc tiles this Christmas, only few, few look really good.

Your actually having a laugh arent you. How can you say that Close Encounters of The Third Kind looks bad
![]() Anyway, stop living in the past and be acceptant of fantastic transfers like CEOTTK cause its the closest you will get nowdays to the 'cinema' experience. |

Can't comment on the DVD and Laserdisc releases lately. but most, most Blu-rays look fantastic. Your photographic memory of watching films from a projectionist booth in the 70's notwithstanding I've been more than satisfied with most releases.

Wow, what some people complain about is just alarming me.
Wether the light is blue, green or white, unless you were there at the filming who gives a monkeys? Just give me a good transfer, I can live with underwater lights that give off hues. |

Here! Now go and watch the skies!
![]() Note between the various editions that the brightness has been reduced relsuting in less green smearing colour that masks the background detail. In the cinema it was sheer brilliant white light beaming down and that’s from memory back as far as 1977 saw the film twice. Once was in 1977 with dad’s friend and then year, later the special edition with my dad. I think Columbia/Sony must be aware of this issue. Still there is slight bit of green that will never show in the cinema! |

A few ghastly looking screen captures from Poltergeist.
This most certainly didn’t show up in the late night showing of Poltergeist and Poltergeist II the other side, around 1990 summertime at the Cannon cinema screen 2, Bournemouth. Yes I do remember because with film it would be nice pure white light. What they have done to this is beyond disbelief? If you look at DVDbeaver earlier shots of DVD first edition its (white light) its like they’ve added this blue colour and which white hot light hits it, it turns to carp green smearing, thanks a lot Warner you just ruined the DVD/Bluray for me! Bunch of Muppets! The shot here has slight bit slipping in due to the angle and colour on the rest of screen. If, Poltergeist is playing at late night special show in 35mm or best in 70mm Dolby stereo go and see it, it will put the bluray to shame! Now then! |

Oh and my Dad believes that when he saw Soldier Blue back in the 70s or whenever, in its original theatrical run, that the entire massacre of the Indians was in Slow-mo, not just certain scenes. But he cant prove it, because he doesnt have the original print to look back on to back up his statements, much like you.. Negatives always have a chance of getting damaged, so there is always a chance certain colours may not hold up as good as they originally looked... its something people will have to live with. If you believe it never had a green tinge to it, so what.. do you really trust your memory of watching it "3 times projected" back in the 70s? come on. The Abyss won't be released in the OAR?
Edit: Have looked at said forum, I believe that "16:9 treatment" refers to the fact that the previous R1 dvd was non-anamorphic. I could be wrong. And probably am! Last edited by SymbioticFunction; 12-12-2009 at 09:09 AM. |

I agree! Water is not blue but transparent in real life and real theaters! How can there be so much blue water in this movie it's disgusting. They better release the ultimate director's cut in which Cameron realized his mistake and made all the water white! So much better.
