Default 1080i output to a 720p

Hello everybody,

I have a JVC HD-ILA 720p (which really is 768 lines) and a PS3. I found out that if the output of the PS3 is to set to 1080i (instead of 720p), the picture is much better, probably because it is now downconverted to 768 instead of being upconverted from 720p. (set to 720p, I can see all sort of halos around edges)

The caveat of setting it to 1080i though is that the motion seems less fluid. I guess I'm now seing 30 fps instead of 60??

My question is this: The native resolution being 768p, by inputting an interlaced signal, does the output still remain progressive?

Ok. So I guess the impression of flickering I get is just in my head.

I'm not that familiar with your set... but I would imagine that the deinterlacer in the PS3 would be better than what in the TV, so I would think sending 720p would give better quality... but obviously your mileage may vary...

+1. It seems to me the flickering is a de-interlacing artifact, especially if the source wasn't interlaced to begin with (i.e., most movie DVDs & BDs).

Have you calibrated your TV lately? I'm not much of an expert, but your halo effect sounds more like a calibration issue to me, especially with LCoS which uses prisms. The flickering may only be hiding an optical halo effect.

My TV is calibrated and the haloing is something I've seen on all 720p HD-Ilas. I'm quite sure it's just artifact caused by the upconversion from 720p to 768p.

Like I said, setting the PS3 to 720p gives a more fluid motion, and setting it to 1080i gives it more clarity. I'm going nuts switching between the two to make up my mind on what I like more (buying a 1080p TV would probably be the optimal solution, if money was no object)

I have a 720p plasma (actually 768p as well) and set my PS3 to output 720p as it is much clearer than 1080p output.

I too struggled between deciding on 1080i and 720p but eventually came to the conclusion to stay with 720p output. I figured this option resulted in less conversions between the PS3 and TV.

I say just go with what looks best to you.
