The latest update is 1.92 and that has several improvements, including DVD upscaling, which is what you're looking for.

Hope this helps.

just go to the playstation.com website support section using your computer to download the newest firmware 1.92 to your memory stick by following the instruction from the website.

Or if you have a wireless router, you can set your PS3 up on that and then it will let you know everytime there is an update available.

The simplest way by far if you have a broadband connection and the 'black box' has a network cable coming out of it plug it into the PS3 (if the black box is a smart one) and the PS3 has not had it's defaults changed, go to the Settings then at the top system update and follow the prompts. If you have not registered the PS3 you may have to do so.

Anyone that gets the wireless network to work very easily have NOT set up their wireless very securely, which is inviting pain and sorrow.

That's awesome! Keep him away from the AVM$ forums.

You don't have internet, try in setting to search for a wireless internet. Some one close to you might have wireless internet and doesn't have it locked. If so you can download the newest firmware that way. It's what my friend does. He doesn't have internet, so he'll just update his with some one else's internet lol.

Really? My TV only has component inputs, so that's what I use. Blu-ray looks great, but I didn't think my DVD's looked any better than before with my DVD player. How come I can watch Blu-ray hi def over component but not upscaled DVDs?

does your TV have DVI input?

as for why it wont upscale via component...im only guessing but I think is because chip that upscales has to do it mathematically with a digital signal(?)
component is analog.

Man Im probably way off base here, but sounds good in my head.

also, you can watch Bluray High Def 1080i max over component, for 1080p you need HDMI.

No DVI, just component - those 3 thick cables with red, green & blue.

The manual says the maximum resolution is 1080i - it's one of those big Sony rear projection HDTV's when they first came out 4-5 years ago. It still works great and I don't want to buy a new one for a couple of years. I know my PS3 has that new 1.92 software - my nephew came over and hooked it up to my cable internet modem to update it. The nephew said I probably need a new Tv with one of those HDiM connections to get the DVD's. That's OK, I stopped buying DVD's - these new blu-rays are a lot better.

It won't upscale because there is no support for the DRM in non-HDMI cabling.

The reason for this is so that people can't rip a low res version of a copyrighted product then simply upscale it to better quality. The HDMI cable ensures that the DRM is respected and the 'source' is legit. Unfortunately, component can not do that so those of us using it don't get the upscaling benefit.
