Default Blu-ray and HD-DVD Here to Stay?

Is both Blu-ray and HD-DVD here to stay?

It seems more likely that both formats will die before they exist together. If the war goes on too much longer, the average consumer is going to move from the sidelines to saying "fu*k it" and sticking with their DVD's, since they know they can go into any store, buy a DVD, and it will work on any DVD player they put it in. For most people, two formats for one purpose requires too much brainpower, shelf space, and cash.

Quote:
Although Paramount's recent decision to exclusively support HD DVD would seem to undermine the report's prediction, Screen Digest says that the move effectively secured HD DVD's immediate future, and cleared the way for the other studios that currently support one platform only to move to an agnostic position without being perceived as the studio solely responsible for prolonging a format war, or for killing off one of the formats.
I do like the sound of this paragraph.

I think the only way they would "both be here to stay" would be if all films were released to both formats. Which inevitabley means that one would indeed win out over the other. Why release the same movie twice with the same or similar quality in two formats when they can just drop one?
No, I find that these High-Def Digest guys don't always know what they are talking about. I take their news lightly. I am confident that if all movie releases were equal, you would see a quick and painless death of HD-DVD.
No one wants to have two players just to watch the movies they want. They are insane if they think J6P would want to buy a Blu-ray disc player AND an HD-DD player. It's confusing and expensive enough as is. They are just being hopeful for HD-DVD, and honeslty, not realistic.

dammit...where's my lame family feud pic when i need it.......

there it is.

both formats and the companies supprting them are fundamentally at odds. fox won't support piracy by going to relatively unprotected hd dvd, disney will always want region coding, and sony well nuff said. universal and paramount/dreamworks are desperately grasping for reasond to stay in the hd dvd camp. after christmas we'll see if these articles of desperation continue or if everyone starts to see the writing on the wall

Default Maybe, but don't think so

It might be that in the short-run both will co-exist, but in the long-run there can only be one format. It would be pointless to have two formats.

It's easy for the home in a way, cause we can either pick a side (since in theory studios will manufacture both formats), or we can have a combo player that plays any format. On the go it be a little harder though, cause some laptops might have either a Blu drive, or an HD-DVD drive, as not many would be willing to pay extra for the LG drive that reads both formats.

The consumer would also be greatly confused by such a thing. The best thing to do is play fair for now, meaning all studios can go neutral if they want for a few months. Then they should look at the numbers and decide (as a group, an industry) which format will be the future.

...and we all hope it'll be Blu-ray
