Default How to Calibrate?

Can anyone explain to me how to calibrate my display? The only thing I am remotely familiar with is changing the levels (color, contrast, brightness, etc). I have the brightness set somewhat low because otherwise you get a gray tint over the picture that makes the blacks look gray. I have a Toshiba 51HC85. Thanks!
