This must be posted over a hundred other times.... the PS3 cannot pass those formats over HDMI bitstream yet, it still requires a firmware update. The only player that is currently capable of passing Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA to a reciever is the Samsung BD-P1400. With the PS3, you have to settle for LPCM, which is pretty much the same thing. If you select the DTS-MA option on your movies, you will only pass the core DTS signal to your reciever since the PS3 cannot decode it. Essentially you will only get DTS 5.1 regular. If you are dying to have the new DTS-MA audio, then get the BD-P1400.

The PS3 does have 1.3HDMI but does not output Dolby TrueHD over Bitstream and at the moment does not support DTS-MA. It does support Dolby TrueHD but only by decoding it internally and then outputing it over LPCM in which case the receiver will do the decoding itself. I think if you look over the threads you will see this question a lot on the PS3. You do get Dolby TrueHD if you set it to PCM and the receiver probably will only show it as multi-channel PCM instead of TrueHD.

As far as DTS- MA, it is not supported on the PS3 at the moment but it is believed that it will be supported in a future firmware from what I read. Again, only through internal decoding and then outputed as LPCM so the receiver won't reflect it as a DTS - MA signal.

That I do not know, I believe most people at the moment do the decoding on the player as few receivers can decode and not many players will transmit over bitstream so they really have to decode on the player and transit by LPCM. This will probably change over the next year with the newer players and receivers. But as far as the PS3 goes, it has more processing power then most of the standalone players and probably the best devise when it comes to firmware updates so it is a good choice.

It just does not work for me as I want 5.1 analog outputs as I have a processor with no HDMI input. I did own one for a short while but returned it and plan to buy a stand alone player within the next 2 months.

I have a Denon 2808CI after having had a Sony and Pioneer and I am very impressed with it.

The second remote is if you set it up with a second zone.

My AVR is Denon.

Good Stuff. Will buy Denon again when I upgrade to a model with HDMI audio.

I'm sort of waiting for the refurbished Denon's on Ubid to evolve to that. Refurbished Denons on Ubid have HDMI passthrough currently so I still have time to save up.

(As if I could put aside buying Blu Rays and start actually saving up.)

I just picked up the 3808CI last Friday. It's a great receiver. Take your time hooking everything up and calibrating your system. The manual is pretty hard to understand; however, the GUI is really easy.

The second remote is for Zone 2 or 3.

I have a Denon 4308CI. It is an awesome receiver. It also comes with two remote controls. I really don't need two remotes. I would have preferred a better single remote.

I'm a big fan of Denon now. Used to own both Denon and Yamaha receivers and bought into the overhype of Yahama "DSP simulation" but find most of them just gimmicks after extensive listening. Esp the Denon 3808 in particular is awesomely powerful and never run of watts even when tackling the most demanding soundtrack and at the same time also great for music.

Only drawback, a bit too complicated. I'm still reading the manual to figure out all the functions and features. Good luck and enjoy your receiver!

Btw here's how to use the 8 points Audyssey MultiXQ Setup

1- Mic straight up to the ceiling (pointing)
2 - Head Level

Front mesurement are done 2 feet in front
Rear measurement are done 2 feet in back

1 = Main listening area

After setup, put the speaker to Small, this was recommanded by the avsforum guy from Audyssey as this setting is not forced by Audyssey but by AVR Maker and he suggested to put it at Small to have bass return to the sub.. Unless you have Sub integrated to the speakers..

This was done according to info from the Audyssey guy from Avsforum (from the company) and you must use all 8 points to use the system correctly

Speaking of 3808 FW updates, has Denon ever documented what the new one does? Last time I checked their site did not even mention that there was an update but I installed one a couple months ago.

All this talk of the 3808 is getting me really frustrated that there's such a long wait for them in the UK. Ordered mine two weeks ago, but apparently Denon aren't expecting them till the 17th now, and thats for them to arrive in Germany, they have to get from there to the UK after that before I can finally own one!

Home Theater Connections (Explained)

...scroll down to Optical.

Obviously you would need an Optical cable.

speaking of denon, I need some help with clearing up a doubt. I am being told the avr 1508 can not only pass the video from your player(ps3) to the television and at the ssame time pass the audio for you to take advantage of the pcm 5.1 and dolby true hd and dts master audio. Is this true? they say it is possible provided your tv is 1080i and not 1080p. How about the 1708 or 1908? and a low-budget customer.

Thanks.
