Default Denon 3808 & PS3 - DTS-MA

Hi Everyone :-)

I just updated my PS3 to v2.3 which includes DTS-MA decoding. I have it connected to a Denon 3808CI via HDMI cable and then I put in "Live Free or Die" movie which outputs DTS-MA. PS3 is set to output LPCM, not bitstream.

The Denon 3808 shows "MULTI CH IN" on the display and gives no indication that I can see of doing DTS-MA... is there a problem? :-) Is it configured properly? Or is this normal?

thanks
Jeff

unless im mistaken, the denon only shows dts hd ma and/or dolby true hd on the front screen if the receiver itself is doing the decoding. which in your case, it isnt.

i have the 3808 as well but i have the samsung 1400 blu ray player which is set to bitstream, enabling the receiver to do the decoding, not the player.

so, yes, i believe all is well in your setup. nothing to worry about

Default Yeah, same with my YAMAHA RX-V1700!

All these nice lights like "DTS" or "Dolby whatsoever" only show when PS3 is set to "bitstream".
As mr peepers pointed out before it seems to depend on whether the receiver is doing the decoding or not.
If PS3 is set to "LPCM" our shiny soundmachines will only "see" PCM and then of course will only display "PCM"
... all that wasted money...

But then again, now I can better focus on the movie ... um..

P.S.: oops, sorry un4gvn94538!
Seems I've been to slow with my typing...

Question Denon 3808 compatibility with Pan bd30?

My first post: Y'all seem pretty knowledgeable. I'm about to get a new HD system and have a Samsung 1080p, 46". After auditioning several receivers and reading user comments, I've pretty much decided on the Denon 3808. However, I don't know which blu-ray is a good match. Is there anyone who can advise? Thanks! Any thoughts on Pan bd30 matching a 3808?

Funny you say that. I was getting so impatient for the PS3 to decode DTS MA that I bought a Denon 3808 and had planned to get a blu-ray player that sent the new sound formats via bitstream, and then 3 weeks later they announce DTS MA for the PS3. On the other hand, I have no regrets about buying my 3808 as this is the nicest receiver I have ever owned. My previous 2 Denons were in the 2000 series not 3000, and I am amazed at how much better their 3000 series are. I love the 3808, and eventually I want to get a stand-alone blu-ray player and just use my PS3 for games (less wear on the machine, since it's the 60gb model I am using it for all the PS2 games too). I am considering the upcoming Sony 350 player which will bitstream DTS MA and Dolby True.

What actually lights up on the receiver (whether it be PCM or DTS MA) is not that important to me but in reading some forums, it means alot to some people. It's the same soundtrack, maybe it justifies buying the receiver for them, I don't know. I have read there is no difference if the receiv er decodes it via bitstream or if the player decodes it as PCM, but in other places I have read people posting there is a difference in sound depending on which player you have that is decoding? Anyone read about this anywhere?

I'm looking at getting a 3808 as well, but i'm not sure my player will bitsteam in order to take advantage of the denon's decoding abilities. I have a sony bdp-s300.

The BDPS300 does not bitsteam DD TrueHD only PCM, and does not decode DTS-HD at all. If you plan on upgrading your player, the Panasonic BD30 will bitstream all audio codecs, also the Sony BDPS350 (coming soon) will bitstream as well and 2.0 ready just add update.

I'm in the same boat as you looking to upgrade to the Sony 5300ES so the receiver will do the decoding but the 300 does not bitstream (or do DTS-HD) thinking of getting the Panny 30 or 50 have not made up my mind yet, may wait for the Sony 550 this fall and see if Panasonic will reprice their players.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
So what your saying is if the BD30 comes down in price it would be a good choice to pair up with a high end receiver that does all the decoding/converting? How does the BD30 compare to the PS3 in terms of bitstreaming ability, SQ, PQ, and upscaling? I'm not much of a gamer, so i'm looking for any excuse to avid the PS3, but like the idea that it's "future proof" and fast and all that stuff.
