Cool Advice Wanted - Upgrading to 7.1/new speakers

Ok, I am going to bite the bullet. For Christmas I want to give the gift that keeps on giving....................to myself.

I am looking to build a quality 7.1 system to replace the one I have now (it's a bit dated and not the best quality). My preferences are first, speakers, I would rather buy speakers and no reciever if neccessary now (why upgrade the reciever if I can't hear it?). Second a reciever capable of lasting for awhile (in other words I don't want to upgrade again in 6-12 months). Third and finally, I don't want to break the bank here. I am willing to compromise a bit on price/quality to meet my needs.

Basically it boils down to this, what can give me the most bang for my holiday dollar?

I have been mainly looking at Polk and Boston Acoustic speakers at this point but I am wide open to suggestions and I KNOW this is the right place to ask this question. Dazzle me people!!

Audio is very subjective. The best thing to do is find a place that sells 4 or 5 good brands and go to the listening room. Take your own stuff and play around. If a shop will not let you do this then shop elsewhere.

Fly to San Antonio and go to Bjorns. They've got great audio equipment from the semi-affordable, to speaker systems that cost about $60,000... I'll never afford those, but my friend works there and I get to play my CD's on them.

Oh to dream.

But I'm thinking the plane trip would take money away from what I can afford to spend on this. That reminds me, I need to ask my boss for a raise.

Well, as others have said, sound is very subjective. But, if I were you I'd start doing research on all the different brands out there. I'd check out internet direct brands and store bought brands. Also, your budget would help the members here guide you in some set-ups to consider. I mean, there are many great speaker companies out there: Kef, Energy, NHT, SVS, Ascend Acoustics, Paradigm, etc.

If your looking to form a great sounding but inexpensive system I'd look at the SVS Sat/Sub package. That would probably come in at around $1300 shipped for a 7.1 package. Or you could check out Ascend Acoustics which has gotten a lot of raves and match that with a sub. If you want to spend a bit more you could check out NHT which are an awesome speaker company. I've definitely been a fan of theirs for a few years now...great quality and sound. Just remember to research, research, research before buying.
