Any Info on Disney Classics coming to Blu-ray? - Blu-ray Forum

You know all those limited copies they come out with every so now and then for a classic?

Right now, the only one announced, is Sleeping Beauty. It's coming out next year.

Disney, and other studios, are making very little on catalog titles released for blu-ray. Its the day-and-date releases that people are buying. I find that dissapointing as most releases I am interested in are catalog titles, good new releases only come about 3 or 4 times a year IMO.

I would have loved Jungle Book on blu. It's my all time Disney favorite as a child.

I know Sleeping Beauty will be the first next year- I'm not COMPLETELY sure of the others- but according tothe 7-10 year cycle- "Snow White" "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King" are probably going to follow- I think I saw a DVD re-releasef for Snow and BATB set for 2008 or 2009- So those could very well be the follow ups to Sleeping Beauty- I think tey're also titles listed in the "Disney Blu Ray" Promos on the DVD's. I thin there's a good chance that "Nightmare Before Christmas" may end up on Blu soon- Disney 'reclaimed" it as a "Walt Disney Picture" and pulled all the DVD's- so they could be putting it on the same cycle the "Platinum" and "Classic" films go through

Strange there's no word on Aladdin's Blu-ray release yet; there's a preview clip of Aladdin on a blu-ray promotional disc in stores.

I actually deigned to watch this on DVD late last night. It's a thing a woman would understand.

and I know it won't be on Blu for a long while.

But for those three:

Beauty and the Beast - 2010
Bambi -2012
Lady and the Tramp - 2013

None of those are official, but are decent guesses based on the current platinum release schedule.

I have to say, if Disney is going to take that long to release their movies - 2014/15 - they will loose quite a bit of money. They need to really speed things up. Disney is good, but not that good. Especially with all the double dipping they do with RE-RELEASES.

Yeah, but that's their whole concept. There top 14 animated classics are part of the platinum collection. In order to keep the titles valuable and draw up press with each release, Disney is releasing 2 of the 14 titles per year on a 7 year rotation.

You can't really complain that they're too slow in releasing films, and that they release films too often. Anyway, I would thnk most of their "other" films will be available long before the last of the platinum collection titles. And people care more about some of the other titles quite a bit... particularly the Pixar titles.

I got it, but I just don't understand why they keep them locked away and not being released any quicker. They are good, but how many times can they release Snow White?

I'm with you. It would be nice.

That said, Disney is spending some serious cash doing major digital restorations (through DTS, formerly Lowry) with each new platinum release. And now that they'll be redoing them for 1080p Blu-rays, I'm sure the cost will be even higher.

In the end, Disney will do what Disney will do, and I think we'll all be happy with the quality of the releases when we finally do get them.

Don't you notice? Every time they re-release these titles, they shoot up to number one again. If they kept them in constant availablity, people may not buy them because they think they will always be there for them to buy. If they know they are going away, they will snatch them up. Plus, there are always new children being born. 7 years is a good span for it, because people with new kids who hadn't previously purchased the movies will do it now, when they are re-released, when in the past they had encouragement to buy them.

I was actually very disappointed that they didnt release the Jungle Book on BLU when they released the 40th anniversary edition. I was really looking forward to that classic in my collection!
