Default Question about recievers

Right now I'm running a Sony STRK607P, which came with a home theater in a box. It was a hell of a deal when I purchased it and figured if I replaced it, I could put it in my bedroom. Now my question, I was never really huge into Home Thearter equipment, what is this reciever capable of doing? I know it's not much because of no HDMI input/output. Can anyone give me a little knowledge on it? Maybe a little advice for upgrading without spending a million bucks! haha

I googled "Sony STRK607P" but comes up nothing. Sony does not make the best speakers or recievers.

what is your budget for the new reciever?

Look at denon & yamaha

I recommend the Sony STR-DG910. I bought mine for $330 from JR. It has 3 HDMI inputs (vs 2 for the 605)

A better value in my opinion. Oh and it handles 7.1 PCM via HDMI, probably the #1 factor when selecting an HDMI receiver to use with Bluray.

I also have this receiver and got it from JR at that price, it's solid all the way around.

Tremendous sound for the price. Someday I may even get the extra 2 surounds. I'll need a bigger living room first.

I just looked at the user manual for that model.
The best you can do is to use the optical audio cable to get surround sound 5.1 channels. I don't think this will handle the very intense sounds like lossless and such. You might be lucky if this can handle DTS.
Either way, it does not use HDMI, which I highly recommend.
I would suggest upgrading this when you can save up enough to a 5.1 or 7.1 system that can use HDMI cables (at least 2 in and 1 out). This way ALL you would have to do is hook the sources (cable/sat, ps3/bd player) using an HDMI cable to the receiver, and then hook to tv to the receiver with an HDMI cord as well. This will give you the best sound.
But until then, you will have to make do with basic 5.1 surround sound using the optical cord.

Yeah I'm currently using an opticle, but I'm getting annoyed switching it between my PS3 and my 360, so I really want something with more inputs and preferably an HDMI.

Thanks again for the suggestion guys! I kinda hate the fact I ignored getting info on recievers, now that blu-ray is in my life for good, I want to get the sound out of it. I'm glad I can come ask questions without making felt like an idiot. Like some boards
