Default How well will The Simpsons do?

I know we've had a few 'The Simpsons Movie' threads of late, but I am curious as to how well you all think this title will do the week leading up to Christmas.

It's animated, but it's not an animated movie in quite the same way as a Disney title such as Ratatouille or Cars. I mean, the show has been on TV for well over a decade, and getting closer to two decades. It's also not entirely a typical "family movie" like most Disney flicks.

It's also a brand new Blu title. It's Blu exclusive. And the main competition that week is from Blade Runner (both formats) and Terminator 3. Again, I have both of those on order, as well as The Simpsons Movie; but we've seen that titles that have been on DVD for years don't do nearly as well as brand new titles have. (While we snap them up, we're not typical consumers on this list, I don't think.)

Is it going to be a LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD blockbuster, or a Ratatouille bestseller? Again, what do you folks think?

This title is up in the air for me. Not as well as Cars or Ratatouille, but it could do better than I think. It could also do poorly.
I suspect it will be close to Shrek 3.

It will do extremely well. It is purely new content so the fact that the show has been on DVD forever is 100% irrelevant.

I think is going to do good, but not as good as LFODH or RTLE. I have it on order.

Your statement is inconsistent. In general you seem to have a somewhat gloomy outlook but then say it will be close to Shrek 3. gievn that S3 had twice the box office isn't that a fantastic outlook? What kind of expectations should we have?

BTW it will do way better than Cars.

I agree because Cars had been on DVD while The Simpson's Movie is brand new. But will it to better than Ratatouille?

I dont think it will do poorly, because there are an inordinate amount of ps3 owners who do not typically buy animated movies like ratatouille/cars/shrek, but the simpsons movie has a much bigger draw towards those types of ps3 owners, IMO.

I saw a trailer for the simpsons movie on the last blu I watched, and it looked GREAT!!!

I will be purchasing it for christmas (for myself) and a 40 GB PS3 for the rents

may you all have a blu holiday season

Well, as a matter of course, there are sooooooo many Simpsons fans out there...

All went nuts when the movie was announced

So I guess it will do pretty good

no chance it even comes close to Ratatouille.

And I'm sure I'll get flamed, but in my opinion, this was a yawner of a movie. Just not all that funny, and focused too much on the family and not enough on the townsfolk, which is exactly what the show itself suffered from a few years back.

I know it's called The Simpsons, but Marge + Lisa = lack of entertainment.

I think it do well. The SD DVDs sell really well. The Simpsons have become classic in the sense that there are people out there who may not even watch the show anymore but are 'collectors' of any merchandise.

I will be getting this movie for sure. I thought the movie was about a 6 but I love the simpsons. I hate the show now because it always seem to revolve too much on Homer.

Statements like that are funny. No chance? Right, none.

Kind of like there was no chance BD would win Transformers week. Those emphatic statements can come back to bite you in the ass.

The logic behind my suspicion that it might not sell as well as we hope it will is based on one simple illogical assumption most people (j6p) would make...

animation doesn't need to be in HD.

I would be the last person to say this. But I know tons of other people who think it is true. I am just afraid people will not see a need to spend the extra money and buy it on BD and just get the DVD.
A 3D animation will look better cause it renders everything, every shade and detail, all in a computer, and makes them photo-realistic. But 2D animation can not do this so too many people will likely pass up the BD for the DVD.

That is the reason I am afraid it would not sell as well as it should. I hope I am wrong, but we'll see what happens.

I love animation in HD.
We have some screen shots of the HD version here at work (advertising agency) and it looks sick. Very clean black lines. Clear colours. Etc.

I predict 12th best selling BD...

If it gets more reviews like this---

Quote:
Although only conventional 2D were graphics used, it shows more detail than on television and it is more vivid than many CGI-animated films. The image sharpness is excellent. The delicate contours of the figures are provided by the Blu-ray Disc with extreme accuracy. They are so sharp that even the smallest artificial increase in the sharpness on TV inevitably results in double contours. The colors are very strong and have a greater range than on television. Since the compression is flawless, the Simpsons movie offers absolute perfection on this Blu-ray Disc.
---then I shan't worry a tiddle about sales.

h/t Grubert the great for the link to the original review on German site areadvd.de, as well as the translation.

OK, but BD movie sales are almost entirely dictated by people who already own BD players and NOT by J6P. You rationale explains why a movie like The Simpsons would not drive player sales, but does nothing to explain why the movie itself won't sell. People who own BD players already do not think like J6P.
