I think the film itself was overhyped coming to BD, but I wouldn't say completely seeing as how it is a Spielberg movie and probably the only one we're going to have on BD until we get closer to the end of this war.

Overhyped? Come on, this film was amazingly restored for such an old film, looked like it came out yesterday, thus the hype!

I just can't imagine how anyone could say that this release is over-hyped.
It didn't get nearly as much hype as it should have.
8 Oscar nominations. #64 on AFI's 100 greatest movies list, #31 on AFI's 100 greatest thrills list.
4 Golden Globe nominations:
Golden Globe, Best Motion Picture - Drama
Golden Globe, Best Director
Golden Globe, Best Screenplay
Golden Globe, Original Score
I'll bet if you asked Michael Bay if Transformers was as good as CEOT3K he would admit that it isn't even close. CEOT3K was written and directed by Stephen Spielberg. Mr. Spielberg's films have more than doubled the grosses of his next closest competitor.

I wouldn't go that far. 2001 was made long before Close Encounters and looks MUCH better.

Agreed.

I was not around when this film came out but I did catch pieces of it here and there and I can say that the BD release is 10000000000x's better than anything they played before.

Good movie too if your a sci-fi junkie.

Different film styles and different film stocks. I believe most of 2001 was shot in a studio. Most of the non-effects shots in CE3K was shot on location.

Sort of hard to compare, completely different filming styles and locations.

Alright, I have to ask, can anyone confirm that this film is pretty grainy and in a couple of scenes, there's this... well I guess you could say a bar of light that goes accross the film from right to left in some shots. You can only see it on the darker scenes. One spot is 30:20 into the Director's Cut... Am I imagining this? Is there something wrong with my PS3 or something (it's not the TV because I can pause it).

ClaytonMG, No. It's not your imagination this time. Minor flaws in the original print I'm sure.

Default Just watched The Third Kind for the third time

Nice movie. Well worth the bucks. I didn't expect the extra disc or book. The seamless branching for the three versions worked... seamlessly.

Woohoo! I am not crazy! I had never seen the movie before (I loved it by the way) and I thought "... is there something wrong with my TV?" Because the TV was only like a month or two old so I thought maybe it was something new happening to it. Glad to hear it's on the print. But seriously, this movie does look pretty good for its age. One of the things I liked about it was the grain. It really faithfully kept the grain while not changing it into compression artifacts or anything like that. A very nice encode...

Guys, just because he lives in the same city doesn't mean we share the same opinion
