Default How Good Do PS2 Games Look on HDTV

I bought Cris a PS3 40 gig for Christmas because someone told me the PQ of the PS2 games look awful on a hdtv. Now someone tells me different.

So my question is what is the PQ of the PS2 games on a 1080p TV. He is not a gamer and either I am so he would be content with the 3 or 4 games he already has and plays when he is bored. (Grand Turismo 4, Unreal and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City) are the only ones I remember.

mgs: 3 looks almost as good as a ps3 game. gran turismo 4 looks pretty good too, a lot better than with a ps2. the other two games i don't have.

Well, at first there WAS an issue with PS1/2 quality with a PS3. This was mainly due to the infamous 'pixel flipping' with 480i and 480p games. There's some examples of this on you tube showing it with the PS2/3 side by side and FFX, but in short heres a picture:

This has sense been fixed in a firmware, and the PS3 even offers scaling and smoothing for these games.

I prefer not to play with stretching or smoothing though, but that's just me. FF8 looked pretty good for a 10 year old game 2 platforms ago when I played, and actually looked better than PS2 conversion. Also, I've heard that the 40g version doesn't have the required parts to play PS2 games. I don't know if this is true or not... You might want to check.

PQ isn't even the issue here--- The 40gig PS3 doesn't support backwards compatibility. I would either return the system, or start buying some PS3 games.

The OP bought the 40GB PS3 because the OP heard the PQ is bad.

Now OP wants to know if it's really that bad, if not I'm guessing the OP will return the 40GB and buy the 80GB

I should have mentioned the reason I wrote this is because I bought the 40g but can return it for the 60g. I been told the 60g is better for backwards compatibility than the 80g

I have played a few PS1 games and they look the same as they ever have.. just on a bigger screen.. which I did not notice to cause any issues. A nice tv can make older things look worse.. but it has nothing to do with wether the game is being played from a PS2 or PS3.

Personally I would return it and buy the 60GB, I believe there is a option to Upscale PS/PS2 games in the settings.

If you can get a 60g do it

The 60g does things the 40g can't (It's more than just a bigger HD)

or just play some kickass ps3 games. I'd never played the ps2 games before because I had an xbox, but I heard ff7 was really great. So i bought it for like twenty bucks new and am playing it. Thing is, it's fine but nothing compared to a ps3 game. The graphics and lipsyncs are awful compared to now. The game itself is fun to fiddle around with when your bored. Anywho. If you're going next gen, then stick with next gen games even if you're not a gamer. They're just pretty. You might both dig the Ratchet and Clank game. It's fun and gorgeous. But I am getting totally off the subject....

My personal experiance has shown the quality to be on a game by game basis. Shadow of the Colossus (one of my favourite games) looks pretty bad on an HDTV while other games such as Hot Shots golf FORE! and Dragon quest VIII look alright. It really is a difficult thing to say that either ALL PS2 games look good - or ALL PS2 games look bad on an HDTV.

The only certain answer is that all PS3 games look good.

FF7 is a PS1 game, it was release in 1997. It's a 10 year old game now, so of course the graphics are not that great. Personally I'm going to buy FF12 after Christmas. (if I don't receive it as a gift) I hear it's pretty good.

older games do look better on the PS3..but, that doesn't mean that they look great.

I sold my PS2 waaay before the God of War series came out same with Shadow of the Colossus....so, I have just recently played them on the PS3..I thought that they held up quite well. They are by no means PS3 game quality..

most old games look bad when you stretch them on a 50" surface compared to a 27" one, though...

I picked up my PS3 when the PS2 game God of War 2 came out. And pre-upscaling, the game looked fantastic on my 56" 1080p dlp. Then when firmware 1.8 came out upscaling PS2 games, the graphics again jumped a lot in quality. Highly recommended.

Also, there's nothing preventing Sony in the future to offer true emulation to those PS3's that can handle it. I hope they do once PS3 development really sparks off and add it as a bonus, but no guarantee.

Some of the technology available today can really make a PS1/2 game sharp. Playing FF7 (legally) with some Cartoon shaders look just as good as your normal HD game today. It just depends if they want to go the same route that the emulation crowd went.
