Default TDK 100GB Blu-ray?

A buddy told me that TDK is supposedly working on a 100gb 4 Layer prototype Blu-Ray Disc! I'm curious if anyone has heard anything on this? CES Maybe? Imagine the possibilities of this! I came accross this article when i searched about it! http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,12...e.html?RSS=RSS

It'll be neat which means more capacity for improvement such as better picture quality and audio quality as well but companies who support blu-ray must upgrade their blu-ray systems for playback. That also means fewer films will turn out grainy which is a plus. If that's the next step Sony, Samsung, etc. better get to work because it's about to get more complicated

Last I heard on this, they (or maybe it was Hitachi) had a working prototype that would play in all current Blu-ray players (including the PS3) with just a firmware update. They were working on getting a lower failure rate in the manufacturing process. That was a few months ago, though, so it might be something we could see being officially announced at CES.

Would certainly trump the TL51 from HD-DVD.

HD-DVD: "Hey, look at us! We finally caught up to Blu-ray's capacity, and even 1 upped them by a gigabyte!"

One day later:

Blu-ray: "We just doubled our old capacity of 50GB to 100GB on TDK's new 100GB disc. That gives us 96% greater capacity than the new HD-DVD format they unveiled yesterday."

"Oh yeah, and they're hard at work on a 200GB disc, more on that next year!"

Lol! That is some funny sh*t that HD-DVD is always in a desperate attempt to raise their self-esteem by upgrading theirs in order to keep up!

Even if they mass market the 51GB disc for HD-DUD they are still limited to lower bitrates..so PQ will still suffer from this limitation.

I really think they want to aim that at PC Data storage rather than for movie storage.
I mean most movie can't even comsume all the space on 50GB (unless they have tons of audios and extras).
Unless they want to release the whole season of 24 on one disc.

Im intressted in the 100gib(& 200gib) disc for the reasons: tv shows, warnerbros, disney, LOTR

From what i've heard Disney approved the HD DVD tl-51 then asked the BDA when the 100gib disc was coming.

Also it's possible it's two variations currently being tested 4*25 and 3*33 also 6 or 8 layer on the 200gib, hopefully they can also up the 1 & 2 layered disc so they become bigger than hd dvd currently offer on its 2 layer discs (30 gib) ... say 33,3 gib & 66,6 gib then improve the production on these, now im not sure this is possible but hd dvd improved theirs to 17gib so i think it's possible..

When do i expect to see first release? announcment will come at CES 08 i'm counting on a lionsgate 100gib tv-show on blu-ray something like Weeds season 3 announced at CES... hopefully the disc be ready by then & released in march

Warner bros for the reason they only need to print 1 version of every release, just add like 100 audio tracks (all pcm ) and loads of subtitles this i believe could save them money on the manufacturing, hmm ye advantage on LOTR which with extra audio tracks would be a 3 disc*200gib set

I suspect going past dual-layer will be solely in the realm of optical storage medium for the computers, rather than a vehicle for HDM.

I also have strong doubts that this 100 GB disc will ever be used as a home video format. I do think it will have some application to the computer industry though. Maybe for the next iteration of high definition it could be used(Super BD at 1440P) but that would be a long time away.

When I read the title of this thread I thought it was about "The Dark Knight" being put on a 100GB disc. But ya I remember that 100 GB disc announcement and I do hope they utilize it for movies, doesnt look like they will though.
