Criterion Blu-ray.com Community's TOP 20 CRITERION RELEASES

Seeing numerous genre or decade voting threads I thought I'd do something a little different.

The Criterion Collection is one of (if not THE) the most well known "boutique" labels in home video. Releasing classic, foreign, arthouse, or contemporary films, Criterion has been going strong since the Laserdisc days. I check out member collections and notice there are a lot of Criterion releases (most getting their own dedicated category) and I wonder "what are some of the BEST Criterion Blu Ray releases?"

Complete Blu Ray releases

Criteria:
For ranking take into consideration transfer in video and audio, bonus features, cover art, the film itself (whatever YOU enjoy), overall cultural significance and essentially whatever you feel justifies the price tag. Box sets or double features will be considered ONE release unless a specific film in said set was released individually (Five Easy Pieces and Easy Rider for example from America Lost and Found). Box set exclusive films (The Last Picture Show, Alice in the Cities for example) should NOT be ranked individually as they are apart of "America Lost and Found" and "The Road Trilogy".

No DVD releases. 20 is the MAXIMUM. 21 or higher will not be counted in the final results. This is done because it makes counting in the final results slightly easier.

The point system, I take inspiration from Juels Winnfield.
Points:
Point System:
#1 50 points
#2 45 points
#3 40 points
#4 35 points
#5 30 points
#6 25 points
#7 20 points
#8 15 points
#9 10 points
#10 5 points
#11 4 points
#12 3 points
#13 2 points
#14 and below 1 point

Deadline is 05/19, happy voting!

#1 By Brakhage: An Anthology, Volumes One and Two
This is the set introduced the fascinating avant-garde cinema to me.

#2 The Complete Jacques Tati
All Tati films in one set with new restorations and extras, this is my dream set that came true.

#3 Dreams
I first saw this in my childhood, completely shocked by this film despite not knowing who Kurosawa was. After so many years without a blu-ray release, one day I found a 150-minute documentary about making Dreams exists and it was directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, another Japanese director I love (seriously, we need more Obayashi blu-ray releases out of Japan), but sadly found it only released VHS in Japan which was hard to find and outrageous expensive at that time. Then the following month Criterion announced they will release this blu-ray, 4K restoration with this rare documentary included as extra.

#4 Ugetsu
I never thought Ugetsu could looked so detailed and clear. The only complain for this release would be no 4K UHD attached, saw this in 4K in cinema and now I want it be one of the very first UHD releases Criterion do someday.

#5 Tokyo Story
My favorite Japanese film was treated so well by Criterion.

#6 Pina
Still the only 3D release from Criterion and one of the rare 3D films that actually explore new cinema language in 3D space.

#7 The Qatsi Trilogy
I even consider Naqoyqatsi a fantastic film, so you know how much I love this trilogy.

#8 Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
One of the best Criterion upgrades from DVD to blu-ray recently.

#9 It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
The Extended Version reconstructed in HD.

#10 Godzilla
The unexpected Godzilla head popped up when I opened the digipack.

#11 Barry Lyndon
Of all the Criterion upgrade of Kubrick we all dreaming about, this one came true.

#12 Repo Man
I blind bought this because the bad-ass cover design, what I didn't expected was the film itself would be even cooler than the design.

#13 A Brighter Summer Day
Criterion saved us out from watching this epic in an unwatchable LD version only.

#14 House
It introduced Nobuhiko Obayashi to me.

#15 Last Year at Marienbad
The only Criterion blu-ray I bought with a high price after its OOP.

DVD releases included?

I think this would be more enlightening if we clarified the criteria...no pun intended.

My initial ranking, prior to clarification on the previous questions:

1. The Apu Trilogy
2. The Thin Red Line
3. The Human Condition
4. Ikiru
5. High and Low
6. Picnic at Hanging Rock
7. Harakiri
8. Badlands
9. Days of Heaven
10. Le Samourai
11. Red Beard
12. Hiroshima Mon Amour
13. Sans Soleil/La Jetee
14. Pierrot Le Fou
15. World On A Wire
16. The Road Trilogy
17. For All Mankind
18. Mulholland Drive
19. Eraserhead
20. Three Colors Trilogy
I did mention for taking into consideration of "video and audio transfer, bonus features, and cultural significance." It doesn't necessarily have to be a "movie B" situation. Every transfer and film is going to have people split down the middle, the list is what YOU consider a good release doesn't matter if the film is good, bad, or ugly; it's what YOU like. No DVD releases, I'll update the criteria.

Okay I missed that...thank you.

But our opinions of the films themselves should be taken into account, yes/no?

I'm going to take a film I love that has a mediocre transfer and bad extras over a film I like that has a reference quality transfer and amazing extras.

But the extras/transfer quality will come into play, in some cases, as a tie breaker or in terms of numerical order.

You don’t necessarily have to have a Top 20 (I have 22 myself and 7 are from a box set); 10 or a top 5 is just fine, heck you can even do a top 9, somebody above even did 35. For this ranking I would go with stuff you actually own, have viewed, examined bonus features, etc.
