"Classic" as in officially old. One can argue that movies never really get old, but if this 25 years rule applies to cars, why not movies?
![]() Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption and every movie made in 1994, you're a classic now. Congrats! ![]() ![]() ![]() When would you label a movie as old? |

I don't know about "old". But I'd say a film can no longer be considered a recent movie after 10 years and can earn classic status after 20.

Just went to a special screening for Pulp Fiction last night and it hit me during the film that it's 25 years old now and took me back to when it first came out. I was in the 7th grade! 20 years old constitutes a classic for me though those same films (such as Pulp Fiction and the other 2 mentioned in the post) are instant classics from the moment they are released. On the other hand it took Shawshank Redemption quite a while to gain it's status. 1994 was quite a year for films.

Lucky you. I hope it gets re-released here too so I can catch it on the big screen too. I’ve been trying to see my top ten favorite movies (seen 5/10 so far) in the theater and the three mentioned in the original post are all in my top ten. Saw Forrest Gump on its 20th Anniversary for the IMAX release and plan to see Shawshank Redemption for its Fathom Event release this September. Hope to catch Pulp Fiction somewhere too.

Anything of good quality that I can tell will still hold up for many years to me is a classic. Time of release has absolutely nothing to do with it.
That being said, there are fewer and fewer films being released every year that feel as though they are deserving of “classic” status. ![]() |

It's not a rational thing, because I can't give a proper explanation why, but I tend to think of a movie as "old" if it was released before the 70s.

The Chase!
That's a movie I'd love to own on blu ray. At least find a cheap copy on DVD. Also happy anniversary to: The Flintstones Blue Chips Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and, yeah the ones already been said. |

I find the older I get, the older a movie has to be for me to view it as "old". When I was 12, a movie that was 10 years old seemed like something from a different universe. But today 10 year old films still seems pretty damned new.
