Default Barbara Stanwyck on Blu-ray

Inspired by all of the "____ on Blu-ray" threads that've been popping up these past few days, I decided to start one based around one of my all time favorite actresses.

Theatrical Films:
The 1930s - Pre-Code era (January 1, 1930 - July 1, 1934):
(Ladies Of Leisure, The Miracle Woman, Forbidden all only included within the Frank Capra At Columbia boxset)

Rest of the 1930s:
(Internes Can't Take Money only included within The Barbara Stanwyck Collection boxset)

The 1940s:
(The Great Man's Lady & The Bride Wore Boots only included within The Barbara Stanwyck Collection boxset, The Lady Gambles only included within Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema III boxset)

The 1950s:

(No Man Of Her Own (1950) only included within Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XIX boxset)

The 1960s:

(Note: Internes Can't Take Money, The Great Man's Lady, and The Bride Wore Boots all only available within The Barbara Stanwyck Collection boxset, The Lady Gambles is only available within the Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema III boxset, Witness To Murder is also available within the Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema boxset, but is available solo as well. No Man Of Her Own (1950) only included within Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XIX boxset).

Foreign Blu-rays:
(Note: Not all of these are compatible with Region A players. Be aware of that before you purchase.)

U.K.

Australia:

France:

Germany:

Some Notable DVD Holdouts:
(Note: This is mainly highlighting still in print releases, with some exceptions, and also solo releases whenever possible. Ten Cents A Dance is only included in the Columbia Pictures Pre-Code Collection set. Illicit is only available on a double feature set. Night Nurse is only included within Forbidden Hollywood Volume 2, Baby Face is only included in Forbidden Hollywood Volume 1, and Ever In My Heart is only included in Forbidden Hollywood Volume 10. The Moonlighter was originally released in 3D, but the DVD-R of it is 2D only.)

Foreign DVDs:

France:

Some Notable TV shows (all DVD only):

Not On DVD/Home Media:

Mexicali Rose (1929) (Columbia)
So Big! (1932) (Warner Bros.)
Gambling Lady (1934) (Warner Bros.)
Red Salute (1935) (United Artists)

Good thread. She's one of my favorites.

By the way, if anyone is interested in checking out The Barbara Stanwyck Show, I bought this two-volume set on Amazon for what appears to be the best available price: https://www.amazon.com/Barbara-Stanw.../dp/B07Y5L32BL

It's getting low on stock (and will probably go out of print at some point), so if you're interested, I recommend picking it up sooner rather than later.

Barbara Stanwyck is hands down my favorite actress , contrary to what my profile pic might lead you to believe. I really hope criterion upgrades The Furies to Blu-Ray sometime soon.

I don't know if she's my absolute favorite classic Hollywood actress (I can watch Ginger Rogers in any bad movie she's in), though she's close, but she's definitely my pick for best classic Hollywood actress, and the one with the best and most versatile career. To me, she's up there with Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and the like for having one of the best and longest prime filmography. She was great in many different genres. The Furies should have been upgraded long ago.

I'm hoping that since they finally upgraded The Lady Eve, that it won't be too far away. It would go nicely with Forty Guns!

Just how many horror movies did Ms Stanwyck appear in in the 60s-70s, I keep on seeing listings here and there and I never know if they were released in different titles or released in other countries with different English titles. Then factor in the trying to find out the best version

Heads up - The Bitter Tea Of General Yen (1933) is now getting a pressed Blu-ray release (not a BD-R like the last release) in September.

I didn't know the existing release was BD-R. I'm glad I passed it up the last time I considered buying it.

Her last theatrical film was 1964's The Night Walker.
She later appeared in two made for TV films:
The House That Would Not Die 1970
A Taste of Evil 1971

I have all of these except for the French & German Blu-Rays and a couple seasons of Big Valley. As soon as I have some extra $ I'll pick up the Blu-Rays minus, sadly, Flesh and Fantasy as I can't find a copy anywhere...

Speaking of Ms Stanwyck, Film 4 in the UK is airing quite a few of her movies, having already shown The Violent Men (love that movie), The File On Thelma Jordon, Sorry Wrong Number, and The Furies, with that stunningly violent moment.

Thank you for starting this. I am a huge Missy fan. She and Ingrid Bergman are my absolute favorites. I only wish they’d appeared together in a film.

I am pleased to see her filmography getting major distributor love. I have refused to buy The Strange Love of Martha Ivers and The Bitter Tea of General Yen because they were such half assed releases. Most of the Capra films got these beautiful digibook releases, yet Barbara’s turn with him is treated like an afterthought. Forty Guns will be on my next Barnes and Noble order. Hopefully, Criterion has more in the pipeline.

I don’t understand how so many of her best, and most beloved films remain conspicuously absent. I’ve seen them on TCM-the surviving elements look great. Yet Stella Dallas, Baby Face, Ball of Fire-where are they? One would think that movies pairing Barbara Stanwyck with the likes of Henry Fonda, Kirk Douglas, Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, etc would be no brainer releases.

Oh well. They’ll come eventually, and I’ll be ready to buy them. I’ve got The Lady Eve, now, and I’m happy as a clam.

I’ve subscribed to this discussion, and I’ll be checking it frequently. Thank you, again, for starting this, SanCarolina59.

Thanks. I'm hoping more of her filmography comes to Blu-ray in the next year, especially with WAC going on a roll right now (Warner owns the majority of her remaining films that haven't been released on Blu-ray) and Kino potentially making a 3rd Universal deal. As far as what the best copy of The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers, the best copy of it out there is a now OOP DVD from Paramount themselves listed below, which is to my knowledge the only official version of this film ever released (I'm not certain if TV airings of it on TCM and other channels are taken from this source or random public domain transfers of it):

this site can be a very cool resource. I came to this thread today to ask this very question - if the folks here would consider the Paramount DVD a better release for this film being that the Blu-ray has been given a heavy treatment of DNR.

thanks for answering my question before I asked it!

I'm not sure, but from what I vaguely recall when I was researching the issue, I ended up just deciding on the iTunes HD version when it was on sale for $5. (I know, I know... Digital, yuck - etc. etc. But I figured I wasn't breaking the bank at five bucks and could always upgrade if a better disc ever came around.)

Kino has detailed their upcoming release of Union Pacific (1939):

Filmmaking legend Cecil B. DeMille (The Plainsman, The Ten Commandments) directs the classic screen duo of Barbara Stanwyck (Internes Can’t Take Money, The Lady Eve) and Joel McCrea (The Great Man’s Lady, The Palm Beach Story) in this explosive western about the struggle to build America’s first transcontinental railroad. Jeff Butler (McCrea), overseer of the Union Pacific’s construction, finds a network of schemers bent on sabotage. Most prominent are gamblers Sid Campeau (Brian Donlevy, Beau Geste), Jack Cordray (Anthony Quinn, Against All Flags) and Dick Allen (Robert Preston, Reap the Wild Wind). Dick is a former pal of Jeff’s, but their relationship changes as they fight over the railroad and over Mollie Monahan (Stanwyck), the railroad’s spirited postmistress. Featuring Akim Tamiroff (The General Died at Dawn) and Lynne Overman (Spawn of the North), this action-packed spectacle, filled with political intrigue, stampeding buffalo and train wrecks, delivers everything you would expect from a Cecil B. DeMille epic.

I need to pick up more Stanwyck on DVD and Blu-Ray.

She's also fantastic in The Thorn Birds, which I wish would be reissued on Blu-Ray.

Meet John Doe on Bluray!
Ball Of Fire on Bluray!

I believe both are in Public Domain.

I'm a HUGE fan of Big Valley watched the reruns as a kid in the 70s. Probably watched all of them 5 times over. Took me a while to figure out the Heath story since I never watched the show in a episode order. I remember an episode with Milton Berle and was amazed at what a great actor he was because I only knew of him as a comedian. Also psycho Bruce Dern the ultimate scary bad guy was in an episode.
