Blu-ray discs and plastic outgassing

Hello,

you might be aware of the problem with the plastic Blu-ray cases outgassing, leaving residue on the discs. Sometimes it's just smudges and small spots, sometimes it covers the whole disc. In my case, it never affected the playback of the discs with residue on it.

My question is, have you ever had a similar problem? Is the residue actually harmful to the discs in the long term? It is possible to clean it off but I avoid doing it as I'm kind of reluctant to touch the data side of the discs.

If a disc has any residue, fingerprints or smudges, just wipe it off with a soft microfiber cloth ( or any soft cloth) with a dab of tap water, it's not necessary to soak the entirely. The residue may be from the moisture after it's packaged. Don't worry, it's not harmful to the disc. You don't need to buy any of those cleaning solution unless the disc(s) is really filthy, which it shouldn't be.

Unless I've bought a used disc, I never check the disc surfaces unless there's a problem. And there rarely ever is. Out of sight, out of mind.

Thanks, actually I tried wiping off the residue off some discs - it worked but I think I left some microscratches on the surface. I noticed them only after breathing on the disc, so they aren't really likely to affect playback but it's kind of unsatisfying to do this kind of thing. I have watched a few films from the discs with the residue on them and it didn't seem to have any effect on the playback, so I think I will leave it alone - I just wanted to make sure that it will not ruin the polymer coating (or something like that ) in a few years' time.
