Default What happened to the 100GB Blu-ray Disc?

What happened to the 100gb disc? I remember Hitachi announced that they had had created a a 100gb disc but then that disappeared. And TDK also had prototypes of 100gb discs. And now there is no news, rumors or talks about it. I would like to know because I would likes movies on a 100gb disc and also this would be a big step for blu-ray.
Thanks

May take a while before it's ready for consumers if it reaches us.

What happened to triple layer DVD? Beyond Dual layer and you begin seeing reduced efficiencies of scale.

It is only hype to counter HD DVD's TL51.

Current movies don't need more than 50gb. If one movie can fit 50gb, for all extras, they can always make another disc to hold it.

companies don't want to risk sales to promo 100g, unless consumers are really need them.

Hype? I recall Max saying he's seen working prototypes. I also read that it probably won't be used for movies.

TDK is working on a 100 (and even 200) disc for data ONLY but Hitashi is working on a 100GB disc for movies. If they succeed, they say that only a firmware will be enough to use those discs

It may take a new laser to read a 100GB BD-ROM disc, especially if the disc is single sided (instead of a double sided dual layer disc).

I'm not holding my breath for such discs to hit the market. Dual layer 50GB BD movie discs have only become very common over the past year. I would think replication problems would be magnified with a 100GB disc.

Notice nothing has come from those claims of Toshiba saying they had perfected a triple layer 51GB HD-DVD? Replication issues and playback problems in existing players are certain culprits. Even the TotalHD and HD-DVD/DVD Combo format discs have been plagued with replication problems.

I did read something over at the Tom's Hardware website about Sony and some other folks unveiling a new 3 nanometer laser. But they didn't mention anything about 100GB discs. They just said the new laser will make dual layer 50GB BD-ROM recordable discs feasible to bring to the marketplace. The new laser will also allow for even thinner BD drives for ultra-portable notebooks.

We never needed FUD to counter FUD...

The BD100 will be developed in the next year but will only be used for storage media, not movies.

The 100gb discs that they are talking about are all blank-discs for BD burners. They can't actually press discs that are quad layer, but apparently they can make burners than create them, making them very useful for data storage, but not really useful as a movie distribution medium.

I'm looking forward to that type of space to use instead of my myriad of external HDDs

As long as they fit one movie per disc with the highest possible quality, I'm ok wit 50GB discs. extras are nice but the movie first. a second disc for extras is fine. as for 100GB discs, they are welcome but please make sure they work absolutely fine, because whenever there is something new in that line of things, there are always reports of problems with some players etc.

[QUOTE=kpkelley;549582]What happened to triple layer DVD? QUOTE]

It got cancelled because it didn't work very well. The laser had difficultly reading the 3rd layer. But BD doesn't have this problem as the data is closer to the laser 0.1mm over 0.5mm

First i'd love to see the 100gb+ discs be used for movies.

the investment recently in improving the blu-laser making it smaller & cheaper, and also organic coloured layer disc that make these easy to manufacture in existing dvd plants, the organic discs would likely support a few extra layers & with not to bad yield rates. the only downside is how/if existing machines would read these new discs

The Blu-Ray included a theroretical limit of up to 8 layers for 200gigs of information. TDK has already demonstrated a 200gig disc that worked on existing machines!

HD DVD was designed as a video-playback only format and with only 2 layers. When they tried to create a 3-layer disc, the current machines could not focus on that 3rd layer, so if they had ever implimented it, the existing base would have been obsolete.

I think everyone right now is happy with 50gig discs. Now that the war is almost over, it would not surprise me to see 3 layer discs at 75gig or even a quad-layer disc at 100gigs in the next couple of years. As disc production spools up and people get comfortable with the format, these things will come in time.

I think the larger disc capacities (over 100gig) will be developed, but will be used more for the computer data side of things.

There are some super long movies that would really need to be released on one of these larger discs in order to prevent having to switch discs mid movie and still have the best possible quality. LOTR-EE anyone?
