Default What happened to the 100GB Blu-ray Disc?

What happened to the 100gb disc? I remember Hitachi announced that they had had created a a 100gb disc but then that disappeared. And TDK also had prototypes of 100gb discs. And now there is no news, rumors or talks about it. I would like to know because I would likes movies on a 100gb disc and also this would be a big step for blu-ray.
Thanks

May take a while before it's ready for consumers if it reaches us.

What happened to triple layer DVD? Beyond Dual layer and you begin seeing reduced efficiencies of scale.

I'm sure it's still in development, but with HD-DVD dying there isn't need to talk about it until it's able to be produced in high quantities without too many problems.

For me, that was one of the big draws to Blu - the possibility of adding even more layers which may allow it to either hold more data (like season sets in fewer discs) or improved resolution (whenever whatever is next comes along)

It is only hype to counter HD DVD's TL51.

Current movies don't need more than 50gb. If one movie can fit 50gb, for all extras, they can always make another disc to hold it.

companies don't want to risk sales to promo 100g, unless consumers are really need them.

Hype? I recall Max saying he's seen working prototypes. I also read that it probably won't be used for movies.

We never needed FUD to counter FUD...

The BD100 will be developed in the next year but will only be used for storage media, not movies.

The 100gb discs that they are talking about are all blank-discs for BD burners. They can't actually press discs that are quad layer, but apparently they can make burners than create them, making them very useful for data storage, but not really useful as a movie distribution medium.

I'm looking forward to that type of space to use instead of my myriad of external HDDs

I hope 100gb BD-R/E will be well adopted as storage media. But I doubt that.

Look at DVD+/-R DL, although it is double the capacity of the SL one, the price is still high and seldom used by consumers.

What would the marketing reason be for bringing the 100gb to the public? BD50s are adequate for current needs. The cost of making the 100gb is too high and there isn't a current need for it.

Exactly right for movies and other pressed media applications. It would always cost more than 2 BD50 discs to make, and consumers actually see "added value" in a 2-disc set -- even though there's no real logic in that.

But for storage use, it certainly has potential. But they need to work out a lot of details still. The two different demos that were shown some time ago were quite different. They need to figure out what will work best and retain the best compatibility with other BD-R/RE drives (for reading at least). Right now, BD-R 50GB discs are like $40 a piece -- and presumably a BD-R 100GB disc would cost over twice as much to make (and have terrible yields). So, it'll be awhile until such discs could be produced at a price someone might actually be willing to pay.

I think we'll see the 100gb and maybe even the 200gb discs. If they get the replication costs of these down, they'd reduce production costs of TV show seasons and large software packages in the future. If a 200gb disc costs four times as much to produce as a 50gb disc, but it takes four 50gb discs to fit an entire season of 24 in HD on Blu-ray, then it's cheaper to release the season on one 200gb disc. Why? The packaging + shipping + handling for one disc is cheaper than the packaging for four discs.

I was thinking, what if Sony used those 100GB discs for PS3 games for something like MASSIVE RPG's or somethin', like holding hours and hours of dialouge or a massive game with brilliant graphical capabilities, native 1080p resolution, 7.1 lossless audio and 4D graphics. Just a thought.

As long as they fit one movie per disc with the highest possible quality, I'm ok wit 50GB discs. extras are nice but the movie first. a second disc for extras is fine. as for 100GB discs, they are welcome but please make sure they work absolutely fine, because whenever there is something new in that line of things, there are always reports of problems with some players etc.

TDK is working on a 100 (and even 200) disc for data ONLY but Hitashi is working on a 100GB disc for movies. If they succeed, they say that only a firmware will be enough to use those discs
