"We have been hugely successful in expanding the number of consumers owning HD DVD players. UK consumers can now pick-up an HD DVD player for less than £150, around half the cost of other HD formats. Even before pricing reached this level, HD DVD represented more than 60% of the overall standalone high definition market.

"Just as importantly for movie retailers, HD DVD has always enjoyed greater software sales per player than any other HD format. In fact, HD DVD owners have already bought around 3.5 movies each, compared to less than one movie sold per Blu ray device.

"While we're disappointed by Woolworths' decision, it is extremely early to spot which format will eventually win. As the figures I mention show - where consumers have a choice, they choose HD DVD. We're confident that HD DVD's affordability, fantastic choice of movies, great consumer experience and upcoming promotions will help it continue to strengthen its share of the market."

Even the wording proves this "per Blu ray device" = All, including PS3
"standalone high definition market" careful wording now excludes PS3.

Talk about toeing the "spin vs. outright boldfaced lie" line. Technically they're telling the truth with carefully chosen words, all while giving a totally false impression.

That's crazy talk for sure. I see how they spin the numbers, but somebody should ask them straight up that if they have 60% of the market and sell over 3 times as many discs per player, then how do they explain that they only have 1/3 of media sales?

IMO engadget or this site should write that toshibas has done it again..... counting ps3 for attach rate, and discount ps3 for number of players.... so the world knows.... and average joe wouldn't get tricked into buying HD DVD players

Toshiba should give up electronics and become a traveling circus act. Their PR BS is very entertaining. They'd sell more tickets for these shows than they ever will for HD DVD!

Toshiba needs to be saved from themselves. When are the shareholders going to finally revolt? And/or when will some outside force just buy majority share in them or something and shut them down and finally get them out of the way of real progress?

That's really been a trademark of Toshiba's history for the last 20-30 years when you get down to it.

Does anybody else notice that Toshiba is the only manufacturer even CLAIMING HD-DVD. Even the LG player that does both has dropped off the map completely. Face the facts Toshiba, Blu-ray has won, HD just won't accept they've lost!!!

toshiba is the only real player in HD DVD. RCA HD DVD is re-branded toshiba, as well as venturer (so I've heard) and onkyo (or is it denon - i can't remember)

Any reader should be skeptical of their interpretation:

If less than one movie is sold per Blu-ray hardware sale, then that would imply that some Blu ray units were not being used for movie watching.

So I don't know who they are trying to fool, but the average reader would have a hard time understanding why someone would buy a [blu-ray] movie player and not use it for watching movies.

Regardless of how you look at it, these comments reek of deception.

Just how far could your product self-image have fallen, if you're actually offended that WOOLWORTH'S won't sell your product?

(And yes, it's Woolworth UK, but how many US readers read the header and were astonished that Woolworth's was still open?...Let alone that anyone bought Blu-ray disks there?)

It is sad but come on guys, no company is going to just outright say that they've lost and are going to quit. Toshiba needs to save as much face as they can. But oh well, let them be ignorant and blantant to the facts, it will just all blow up in their faces when this is over, they could have saved money and a good reputation if they had pulled out early... they want to continue their losing battle.. so let them, they are just gonna pay the price in the end anyway. BTW, this may seem like its out of no where, but whatever...my family and I have many eletronics at hom,e much of which are made by Sony, our first TV that we ever bought when we first arrived in this country was a Sony, we chose a more expensive brand over Toshiba's TV 16 years ago because even in Vietnam, Sony had more recognition for being superior over Toshibe and my dad knew he would be getting a Sony TV for us in America. Just tryiing to say that I had always thought that Toshiba was very low tiered and made crappy electronics all along, but I dont if much have changed or not.
