Seems doubtful, Uncharted will probably keep IMAX screens for its 2nd week and Dolby Cinema is already showing The Godfather all that week.

Three and a half stars
For the recording of their 10th album, the Foo Fighters are determined to create something truly epic that will blow their fans away, but frontman Dave Grohl is suffering from writer's block. Hoping to add some Led Zeppelin mystique to their music approach, the band sets up their studio in an Encino mansion that has a rather dark and sordid history. When Grohl falls under the thrall of demonic possession and experiences a newfound creative spark, the end result is the ultimate “killer tune.” The 2022 supernatural horror comedy film, Studio 666, directed by B. J. McDonnell and based on a story by Dave Grohl, stars the Foo Fighters as themselves in a vanity project that comes across like a blend of This is Spinal Tap, The Evil Dead, Saturday the 14th, and Scooby-Doo. The band's endearingly self-deprecating antics are in full display here, giving fans what basically amounts to a 106-minute version of the “Everlong” music video. Grohl will never win a Best Actor Academy Award, but his facial expressions and his ability to convey emotions with his eyes are the main attractions here, so much so that the mere sight of him in any given scene evokes humor. Rhythm guitarist Pat Smear is the unsung hero of this outing, though, providing a bewildered perspective for the audience when the hard rock segues into cartoonishly gory buckets of blood. This film does not hold back on visceral mayhem, but the death scenes are all so gleefully over-the-top that one cannot help but laugh. I have seen Foo Fighters in concert twice, in 1997 and in 2021. I always ruffle feathers when I say this, but I actually prefer the debut Foo Fighters album to Nirvana's Nevernind, and I believe that “Good Grief” is the greatest song of Grohl's career. While I do not consider myself to be a superfan of the band's output since that debut, I still love their overall aesthetic and I am always pulling for them to succeed. Studio 666 overstays its welcome by a good 20 minutes, and it does not adhere to the show business mantra, “Always leave them wanting more.”, but it is still a fun way to spend time with Grohl, Smear, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee. The good-natured vibe of the proceedings, even in the midst of chainsaw killings and cannibalism, merits a “Pearl Jam high-five.” Last edited by The Great Owl; 02-25-2022 at 03:56 AM. |
