I just realised I've now seen more Hitchcock movies in 4K UHD than in BRD or DVD or VHS format.

And what a pleasure this has been. Thanks to absolutely killer deals Hitchcock 4K is getting.

I cannot wait for Black and White Hitchcock (pre-PSYCHO) 4K releases.

That's all the Universal Hitch titles covered, right? I won't lie, I still haven't picked up the first two volumes because I've been holding out for a complete set! Plus there was that hiccup with the audio on Psycho and I just decided it wasn't worth the hassle, lol.

I think it's 14 picture, so, yes, that's it.

Hoping to see some decent drops with Volume 2.

Frenzy without DNR, Rope in 4K, Topaz and Torn Curtain getting upgrades. Wow.

But the big one...omg finally a new restoration of TMWKTM '56!
That's the one long overdue and its no surprise it's been held to the last volume as the work required was the most of any Uni held Hitchcock title.

Yes! Nice to see these Hitchcock movies finalized to complete the series. Hopefully we will get more Hitchcock in 4K from the other distributors.

Can't wait to see FRENZY in 4K. It's my favorite post-1960 Hitchcock film.

How good could Rope look in 4K? Could it look as good as Vertigo or The Trouble With Harry, for example?

About a Volume 4, do you think it could have North By Northwest, Dial M For Murder, To Catch A Thief, Notorious and Rebecca?

These sets are all from Universal. Volume 3 would complete the 14 films Universal own. The films you list are owned by various other studios:

Warner - North By Northwest and Dial M For Murder

Paramount - To Catch A Thief

Disney - Notorious and Rebecca

We’re still waiting for Warner to finish releasing blu rays of all their Hitchcocks so doubt they’d do a box despite having enough films for one or two.

Paramount only own one film so it’d be a standalone.

Disney generally ignore their catalogue but hopefully Criterion can upgrade at some point.

I think Rope could look very good in 4K. Tbh I'm not sure what condition the negatives are in, but it was shot in three-strip Technicolor so it should have similar technical qualities as other three-strip productions. The best frame of reference would be something like The Phantom of the Opera, also a three-strip production which Universal put out in 4K as part of their Classic Monsters Vol. 2 set.

It won't look AS good as a film like Vertigo or The Trouble With Harry as those were shot in VistaVision, a process that ran 35mm film horizontally through the camera gate (and was 8-perf as opposed to 35mm's standard 4-perf) which wielded a finer-grained print.

A new transfer and restoration of Rope would likely help with some of the edge haloing from the three strip process, like it did with Phantom of the Opera (even though there is still a bit of it present on that transfer). You also get the benefit of the wider colour gamut with an HDR pass so while it won't be "reference" quality, I think a 4K of Rope should look quite nice and true to the source material.

Thanks for the answer! I at least hope these films don’t take too long to get 4K releases, no matter who releases those 4K blu-rays, and if the work restoring the films is great!

Do you think Warner Bros. might release North By Northwest in 4K this year? It seems the restoration already exists. When they finally release North By Northwest in 4K, do you think it would take long for them to release other classic Hitchcock titles from their catalogue in 4K, like Dial M For Murder, Strangers On A Train, The Wrong Man, Suspicion and I Confess, all of which have already been released in standard blu-ray many years ago?

Do you have any idea of when Paramount might release a 4K of To Catch A Thief?

Last, but not least, what is keeping Criterion from releasing Rebecca and Notorious in 4K? They already have recent 4K transfers. Do you think we'll see 4K releases of those films soon?

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) is being shown at the TCM Festival at the Chinese Theater's IMAX theater.
Even though it doesn't explicitly mention it being a new restoration, it'd be pretty shocking if they used up one of the slots for the best theater for this movie if they only had the current mediocre transfer on hand.
