Great thread, one of the most underrated yet terrific directors of the Golden Age. It's easy to overlook just how many awesome films he made.

He's one of the heroes of my favorite filmmaker, Walter Hill, who always strove (and claims to have failed) to replicate Walsh's lean, efficient, no-nonsense way of telling a story.

I currently own 8 of his films, need to add They Drive By Night, Gentleman Jim, and Objective, Burma! to my library. I'm eager to see what else WAC has cooking up!

Great thread! To this day, I still think Walsh's The Thief of Bagdad (with Carl Davis' majestic score) is the most magical movie ever made. Not just my favorite silent movie but also one of my favorite movie of all time. Walsh was already a legend by the time he started making sound movie. What a career he had! I really need to see more of his. I've ordered Captain Horatio Hornblower, White heat and They drive by night from my local library and I own (but haven't watched) Colorado Territory and the World in his arms and I'm pretty excited to discover all of these.

From the ones i've seen, i'd say my favorites so far are The Thief of bagdad, Desperate journey, Gentleman Jim and the Roaring twenties.

Should HELEN OF TROY be listed? Walsh directed the battle scenes and may have been the second unit director as well.

Yeah, for sure. He also worked on a number of other films without getting credited: Lubitsch's Rosita, Huston's In This Our Life, Action in the North Atlantic, Stallion Road and Montana.
