Wow, that's huge. I got excited a couple months back when Universal updated their page, but it was just for it being added digitally. This was very strongly suspected to have been licensed by Kino at one point, but then they decided not to pursue it, I believe after the issues with Columbo (producing extras that were rejected).

I've been slowly making my way through the series over the last couple years via Peacock (and now Prime) and it's been great. The HD masters look very nice for the most part.

This is one of those shows I never expected on BD tbh. And one of the reasons was the number of episodes. 62 discs! Amazing.

When I saw the number of discs, I initially thought “Are we sure this isn’t a DVD rerelease??”

I have a few of the French Blu-rays from Elephant Films (they only got through half the series) and bought the complete series in HD on iTunes last December becauseI gave up hope that this was coming, but I will pick this up in a heartbeat!

This series has 12 seasons with 12,600 minutes so that comes out to ~5 discs per season. For comparison, House M.D. has 8 seasons with only 7,765 minutes and has 39 discs.

Wow, this was unexpected! I will definitely be picking this up. I've almost purchased the complete DVD set soooo many times - but never did, in the hopes of something like this coming along. Not holding out much hope for extras, but it would be nice if the bonus episodes from the DVD set (the Magnum PI crossover episodes, for example) are included.

I recall Kino passed on doing this series, I’m guessing as stand alone season sets.

I’m all in for the Blu-Rays.

I have the french Blu’s for the first 6 seasons, and was hard trying to watch DVDs after that.

Will this be cropped? Kino isn't doing it so maybe there's a chance it won't be?

I hate how they (Kino) butchered Columbo.

Enjoyed this show as a kid and Lansbury was an incredible actress. There's just not enough time on earth to get through a show like this without putting everything aside. However, I wouldn't mind checking out a list of the top fan favorite episodes.

Was kind of thinking Kino Lorber would sublicense this, but any catalog releases from major studios is always welcomed!

Such a fun and wonderful series too!

Thats a good question, I’d guess since the first 6 seasons weren’t cropped for the french Blus, these shouldn’t be.

Hopefully it will be the same for all seasons.

This is info hopefully we will know soon.

Excellent news, will definitely pick this up. I hope it’s single season cases within a large box for the package (like Cheers and Frasier). I hope we don’t end up with stacked discs like the DVD set as those are a nightmare!

I'm definitely in.

I do have the Complete Series DVD set and it's massive so hopefully this set has a more economic design. Maybe those cases that Paramount uses.

Can't help but wonder if 62 discs is a mistake. The DVD set was 63 discs. Would be easier to write off as inherited from the DVD if this were also listed as 63 discs, but surely there would be more disc reduction than one disc across the entire series.

They did license it but then decided to drop it. Frank Tarzi discussed it on an episode of the Cereal At Midnight podcast:
Quote:
We had acquired the rights to another TV show which we dropped. I think it's pretty obvious what it was. We had picked up Murder, She Wrote, but we decided not to release it. We went back and it's a situation where I kept on looking at it, seeing how I could release it where we could even make it profitable for us. It just wasn't possible. We're not...we're not made for releasing 60 disc sets or whatever, how many discs that would have taken to release. It was 12 seasons, five discs. Yeah, it would have been around 60...65 discs. What are we charging for that? How much time is going to take us to author it and do the subtitles and the extras and all of that. All of that, when we thought about it, we were like, whoa, let's stop.
The discussion starts at 27:35:

It's similar to the Deanna Durbin titles that Kino dropped. Kino cancelled them and then Universal just released them through their MOD line.
