Default TV settings and firmware questions

Just got my Sony KDL-46V3000 and Sony s-300 Bluray this week.. and out of the box I'm already out of my mind happy with them.
My questions -
1. How do I know if I need to update my firmware and where do I do this?

2. Does anyone have the same or similar TV and have any setting reccomendations for me? I currently use the 'vivid' setting for some BD's and a custom setting I have played with a bit for other BD's and DVD's.
I also have an Xbox 360 which looks great - but would accept any setting ideas.

Thanks.

To update your firware you can check here in the Firmware section or the product page of the Sony website. You can then either download an .iso or request a cd be sent to you.

Great info, thanks.
I was told we have to wait about 50 hours before you can have the LCD calibrated.. any truth to this?

And absolutely do not use "vivid" mode!

It just blows the picture out

Shouldn't we have a thread section that just tells people what the calibration settings should be per particular model of TV? Talk about your popular forums!

Thanks very much everyone.

I was told by the sales guy at Best Buy 'not to mess with the calibration settings yourself... it could kill the TV if you don't do it right.'
Any truth here or just protecting their calibration turf?

Thanks.

adjusting your picture settings yourself...No problems. You may get a crummy looking picture, but its not real harmful to the TV...you can always keep adjusting.

What I think he ment was going into the "Service Menu" could kill the TV. Not really kill it, but could FUBAR it if done incorrectly. But have no worry...you cannot enter the service menu by mistake. There is usually a trick to get into it. So dont let it bother or confuse you. (does not apply)

He's talking about the service menu, and he's right on that.

Any menu you can access without jumping through hoops and punching codes into the remote are fine

i also have the 46v3000 and the bdp-s300, i posted my calibrations in the above link supplied by cracken, but i am far from a techy on the subject and im sure it could look better, i am still considering professional calibration but i can say without a doubt stay off the vivid setting, it makes everything blu look weird and standard def look horrible. the only thing i didnt mess with was the gains because i didnt really understand what the cause effect was so i left it alone

edit: 360 i actually do use the vivid setting as it does seem to enhance the detail and with the games i do enjoy the brightness, but vivid is still a bad default picture setting.

Thanks to all again. Good advice for a rookie - I will try some of these settings and get a calibration disc.

Great message board.
