Well, thanks to previous help and awesome advice from the good people on this forum, I have now got myself a decent HD TV, receiver and speakers. Now it's a waiting game untill I can get my mits on a Blu-ray player...
In the meantime I have been madly reading reviews and following the discussion on this forum. From what I understand (and am only a rookie at this) the Panasonic DMP-BD10 has the ability to output native 1080p transfers from discs where as the Samsung can only read 1080i then upscale it to 1080p. My question is ; does anyone know what way the PS3 does it? Reckon if it processes like the panny then the PS3 (with the remote) could be a great way to get into Blu-ray for a cheaper price...and sooner than waiting for the dedicated players to come out here too!! |

The Panny outputs 1080p. However, from what I've read....the Panny and the Samsung both first downrezzes it to 1080i, then deinterlaces to 1080p.....not optimum. I know the PS3 outputs 1080p, but I'm not sure if it is output natively with no processing (other than 3:2).

I believe the PS3 does that natively. 1080p straight and no chaser. Currently doing it at 1080p60 but with the next upgrade perhaps 1080p24.
The current update enables the use of its Bluetooth remote. Don't forget to pick one up. fuad |

The Panasonic don't go via 1080i only the Samsung.
The upcoming Toshiba HD-AX2 will go via 1080i as well from what I hear. It's all about design and processing power, PS3 and Panasonic has it but not Samsung and Toshiba. Why it is so difficult to output 1080p when it is allready the native format on the disc is beyond me ![]() |

wow... just to clarify since you dont know what dos what. samsung/philips - interlace then deinterlace from source (this in lameo terms) panasonic - not sure but believe it does the same... pioneer/sony - supposedly does all naitive resolutions (not sure how it works with different frame rates though?? movies are 1080p24 but only some tvs support that right?? toshiba/rca 1st gen - only output 1080i and let the tv deinterlace (better to let tv vs the hd dvd or bd player) 2nd gen toshibas- ..... not out yet... wierd... you dont know so dont spread shit. (a2's are shipping soon but only 1080i again... but is progressive scan that much better?? reviews dont say so..) theres my 2 cents |

People are confused because DVD is encoded in 480i and needs to be deinterlaced to 480p. But it's opposite for Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Both are encoded in 1080p but are telesined to get 1080i output. 1080p is usualy not supported via component, HDMI is the input you must use to get 1080p. As for PS3. Sony must have been smoking weed, as the Games support 720p out of box, but not 1080i (there is gona be a firmware update that fixes this). However Blu-ray playback supports 1080i but not 720p. Talk about rush job. Bottom line PS3 is just not going to cut it, compared to stand alone Blur-ray players. If they have a firmware that fixes this then PS3 would be a viable alternative to $1000 Blu-ray players. But I guess for $600 for both HD games and HD movies, what could I expect. |

Hi Takezo - a bit techo for me at the moment exactly how it all works with the native 'v' upscaling other than I understand that a native 1080p transfer is certainly the better oprtion. I tracked down where I read re the Panasonic having output to native 1080p versus the Samsungs upscale from 1080i to 1080p. Was as part of a review of the Panasonic DMP-BD10, in issue 52 (PAGE 34) of What Home Cinema.
Full paragraph read: "Arguably, it's (the Panasonic's) most telling feature over Samsung's BD-P1000 is its claimed ability to output native 1080p transfers from Blu-ray discs, rather than only being able to read 1080i from a disc and then using internal processing to upscale to 1080p, as happens with the BD-1000. This should make for a much cleaner 1080p experience..." Hope that throws a bit of light on it. ![]() Will put my hand up as a new proud PS3 owner. Only had it since Saturday but am delighted so far with what I have tried. Luckily have a full HD 1080 TV so some of the issues with it don't think effect me. Can however understand the frustrations some would have with it based on your comments re the 720p . When other players are available here will be keen to see any difference from a dedicated player in terms of image quality etc. Would comment though that it appears to be extremly well built and a classy peice of equipment. Cheers |
