Smile PS2 game upscaled on PS3

Thought I would compare my 60gb ps3 upscaling a ps2 game. Below is a 1080p upscaled pic and a regular 480p with upscaling off.

480p

1080p

Not to shabby.

Yeah it does a pretty nice job and makes PS2 games much more playable on HD sets which is why I would hate to lose the emotion engine if my old 60GB PS3 were to die.

Ya I never really used it but all of sudden I got a KH urge so will probably give that a go as soon as Arkham Asylum gets beat.

The 480p screenshot should be captured from a PS2 with component cables to give a more accurate comparison. I expect the jump between the two would be even larger.

Yeah I love how my RPGs look on my 60GB(though don't have a 1080P tv just a 32" 720P tv that can go up to 1080i).

On the games I tried 480p looked better than the PS3 upscaling to 1080p.

I believe the games that are upscaled to 1080p are from the 480i source. I preferred the 480p as natively its progressive.

I know what you mean. I remember playing GoW II on my PS3 when it first came out. It was before the firmware was released for PS2 upscaling and I remember it looking better in 480p. Plus, it was true widescreen. Now, all my PS2 games are stretched with the upscaler, including the widescreen games. If I turn off the upscaler, it squashes the 16:9 image into 4:3. Maybe I should invest some money into component cables for my PS3 and stop using the PS2 upscaler. Wait, the PS2 upscaler, is it done internally in the PS3 or does it use the HDMI interface to upscale?

FOr 4:3 games, select normal on the upscaler option for PS2 games. For 16:9 games, select fullscreen. The former will pillarbox and upscale to 1080p. The latter will stretch the image to fill your 1.78:1 TV and upscale to 1080p.

Why would I want a 16:9 image stretched to fill my 16:9 screen? That's exactly what the PS3 upscaler does and it's still pillarboxed. Not only is it pillarboxed, but it's letterboxed as well. If I turn on my TV's overscan to get rid of the letterboxing, it's still pillarboxed. Before the firmware update, my PS2 games were displayed correctly in a 16:9 aspect ratio, filling my whole screen.
