Default Blu-ray... Are they region free?

Hi-
I'm doing some preliminary research on the Blu-ray format, and I was hoping you can help me out. I recently bought a Region 2 disc set from Britain, knowing that my current DVD player does not support the format. My initial thought was that I would get a new DVD player that is region free. Then I got to thinking about the Blu-ray format... Should I go ahead and be forward thinking and invest in the next wave of DVD technology?

So tell me- First off I'm pretty sure the Blu-ray format will play my standard DVDs, but are there Blu-ray players that are region free? If so, what models should I be looking at, and what would the price point be? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated-

Thanks-

Jack Cleveland

blu-ray will play standard dvds.

there are no blu-ray players that are region free. however, not all discs are region coated. discs from WB never have a region lock on them, so they will play on any player no matter what. also, most if not all movies that are produced 1 year after they come out, do not have the region protection on them.

Unfortunately I have bought a box set of Laurel and Hardy from Great Britain that is a region 2 Pal DVD. I suppose the players can be tweaked, but I certainly would prefer them produced that way! The Blu-ray players are backwards compatible, are they not? I can play my standard DVDs on them, correct?

Pick up one of the Phillips upconverters. They can be hacked with the remote to be region free. You should be able to get one for $50

You can also buy an Oppo DVD player. It also upconverts and plays many other things. No, I'm not kidding.
