Question two versions on one disc

Why don't studios put wide and full screen on 1 disc and on one side (instead of using a double sided disc) like with the unrated and "R" versions of "American Gangster"? That way people can just grab a DVD and not have to worry if they grabbed the wrong format.

trust me, I hate full screen. I'm just tired of customers coming up to me asking "Is this full or widescreen"? I've even had some customers want a refund because they grabbed the wrong format.

Why can't people read the back of the disc package? I mean it states the screen format.

On the back of the Back to the Future Trilogy it doesn't state the screen format, and I ended up buying the fullscreen one. Boy was I pissed!

and sometimes it even says on the front of the box (on the banner along the top). Look on the back, if it doesn't explicitly state the format as "wide" or "full" it will give a ration "X:Y." Anything 1.6:1 or higher is widescreen.

or this: "does this disc have DTS?"

>.<

The R and unrated versions can be on the same disc because they do not have to include the parts of the film that are common to both ratings (nearly all) The only additional data on the disc is the extra footage from the other rated version. There are not two full-length files on the disc. The software is capable of seaming the version together that you want to see.

I don't really get all the chatter about OAR. I have a button on my remote that zooms any wide screen picture to full screen instantly. I don't often watch that way, but it's pretty easy to push a button.

This would make sense its just a little late. Havent we moved on to high definition where wide is full?

I think the OP is about the BDs that are presented in the original aspect ratio on the disc. For example, POTC, Pearl Harbor, The Patriot, etc. (Those are the ones off the top of my head that I own) Those films display black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

I believe the poster wants a version of the film pre-cropped to 16:9 available on the same disc. Although, I'm not you could get both on the same disc without compression.

Geez, its only been two days since the last topic like this was locked down. Is this what we have to look forward to since we are no longe "early adopters"?

Because I and others don't want to have video that is half the quality/double the space to accommodate two encodes that a majority of people are never going to use. "Full screen," hopefully, is a thing of the past.

The Unrated/Rated cut could probably be handled through seamless branching.

They tried this a while back with double-sided DVDs, it didn't catch on.

I think there's going to be very few people who will use a pan-scan version if they appreciate OAR, so it would be unnecessarily increasing the cost of the package by putting in a pan-scan version in.

The industry and people should stop using the term "full-screen" because if you have a 16:9 HDTV, full screen is a totally different concept.

I want studios to release Blu-rays with only 20% of the picture of the original film blown up to full screen. And they should take that 20% from the lower left hand corner of the original frame. They should at least have this as an option.
