Default Reuters: DreamWorks Animation waiting for cue from Toshiba on Blu-ray

You gotta love the brutal honesty from Jeffrey Katzenberg.

http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssC...51290220080227

"We have a partnership with Toshiba and have an obligation to see this through," DreamWorks Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said on Tuesday.

"As you know, we have been well-compensated for our support. It really is in their court at this point to really declare what the next step will be. We're poised either way to jump into the marketplace when the conditions are right to do so," he said

I cant actually believe he would go on record and ADMIT that they received compensation that they supported HD-DVD because they were paid to do so.

Wow, for a company to admit their balls are in another company's sling because of money they received just gives me douche chills. Dreamworks HAS to be kicking themselves for taking a bribe to go HD DVD exclusive and then for it to die shortly thereafter. *cringe*

Hmm very interesting it sounds as if their still binded by that contract, & also sounds like all this Bee Movie blu-ray news is probably true but their awaiting word from Toshiba, so that they can sell it, and make an official announcement

If Toshiba keeps paying out the dollars to go exclusive, as much as I hate to say it, Dreamworks would make more money NOT releasing on bluray. However, if it turns out that Toshiba doesnt owe Dreamworks a thing, then bring on Over the Hedge!

If Toshiba is playing hardball then this will be the likely scenario and it sucks.

Sounds to me like he's serving the ball to Toshiba so to speak. He's basically saying, "We have no intention of giving any money back." or, "You made your bed Tosh, now lay in it."

I got that impression too. He definitely gave off the vibe that he doesn't like being in the position he's in NOT being able to release movies on Blu-ray because of taking money from Toshiba.

No, He made his bed. Now he needs to lay in with Toshiba. It is like the wife got Fat real quick soon after marriage. Toshiba doesn't want to sign the divorce papers. LOL@Dreamworks.

Default Common sense is officially dead!

Seems to me that if the company that paid you to support their product, then kills said product, you would no longer be held to said contract. Like, why would a car company still support a tire company they signed to sell their cars on if the tire company folded up shop!

I think you hit the nail on the head.

It was common perception/knowledge dreamworks was paid off. This really does not hurt their image, but many believed the money came from Microsoft. This pretty much seals the fact that it was Toshiba money.

On top of that, Dreamworks is basically saying, we're willing to go blu, but we are in a contract. Its not us, its THEM, if we don't go blu. it makes Toshiba look really bad and puts a ton of pressure on them.

I'm guessing that Dreamworks already approched Toshiba about letting them go and Toshiba refused, so Dreamworks is going to resort to public humiliation and tarnishing Toshibas image even further.

I don't think you understood what I was saying. I'm saying it sounds like he's in negotiations (through this press statement). Someone's going to end up with the money. That's the point.

But you are right in that (from a consumers standpoint) neither one of them are Princes in that regard (Dreamworks or Toshiba).

The article quotes JP Morgan analyst Barton Crockett who says they may make more money from Toshiba than from going Blu-ray.
