Default HMV makes me laugh

So, for weeks (well since the Toshiba announcement at least - is it weeks yet?) I've been walking into HMV. To date, all 3 of the stores in my city are still giving HD DUD as much space as Blu. And in 1 store, DUD still faces the door and has a higher profile.

I've been tempted to walk up to a sales associate and ask them if HMV is actually in tune with reality? And no sales on DUD yet either - all full retail prices.

Why would I go to HMV? Well, the biggest store has a great selection of Blu - so I like to scan the boxes. The other 2 I visit just for kicks to see if DUD is still on the menu now.

I would'nt worry about it mate.. instore they're blu-ray prices have been a joke from the start and I refuse to pay that kind of money from the likes of them. As for still giving more space to HD-DVD well I think the technical term is a "blow-out" sale.. they've got to get rid of the duff stock while they can still get money for it. It does'nt matter in the long run, ultimately by the end of this year there's only going to be the one HD format and once the old stock dries up and all major releases will be out on Blu-ray, they'll have to devote extra shelf space to cope with it.

Not so in the HMV here in Toronto. BD now commands about 2/3 of the space. Its clear-out time.

In the province of Quebec the Archambault stores that I have walked in have removed the HD-DVD section completely about 10 days after the annoncement from Toshiba.

I have a feeling a lot of stores are stuck with the stock hence can't return it to the distributor or studio (too long for a turn around = bad inventory control). The company above has their own distribution company hence it could be why they removed them already.

It is true though that HMV has yet to remove their HD-DVD however they have reduced it drastically in some of the stores in the Montreal region. It will be a gradual thing...

The Yonge and Bloor HMV location reduced its HD DVD selections, but they haven't reduced the price. $39.99 for Knocked Up? 2 HD DVDs for $50?

It's ridiculous.

On a side note, Bay Street Video completely removed its HD DVD inventory a few weeks ago, but they still haven't decided to rent HDM yet.

I refuse to buy any of my BD's from HMV, the prices are ridiculous. I don't really even look at selections in shops any more when I can get them online for far less money. It's bizarre when I can get a film shipped all the way from America for less money than a 10 minute walk to my local HMV!

I've picked up quite a few titles on the 2-for-$50 at various HMVs here in Toronto. Now Future Shop (since last wk) is doing it too. People say you can sometimes shave off a few bucks using Amazon; I tend to like the light exercise walking around on disc shopping excursions. If I started having BDs delivered I might never leave my armchair. As the expression goes, YMMV.

The HMV closest to me (Craigavon, Northern Ireland) has always given more space to Blu-Ray. The main display is a ratio of about 3:1, plus they have more with the PS3 games.

Unfortunately, their prices are ridiculous. Fair enough, a bricks and mortar store has more overheads so you expect prices to be somewhat higher, and often you don't mind paying a little extra to get it today, but their prices are sometimes higher than retail. It's simply ridiculous for the shop to price these items between 50% and 100% higher than they sell them online. If retailers want Blu-Ray to be adopted by the mass market, over-pricing the software ain't going to help.

HMV is typical of any "mall' media retailer on catalog/new release pricing. They are not usually price competitive on most things they sell. Same is true of the big box book stores that carry CDs/DVDs (although they are generally worse).

One of my stores in the Northwest (Fred Meyer/Krogers) has ZERO HD-Dud's and no Blu-ray over $29.99 (usually new release which drop to $24.99 in a week or two). Most are $22.99-$24.99 and they always have an instore coupon for $3.00 off any video (including Blu-ray). So I've been filling my collection with many $19.99 blu's!!! Beats shipping and waiting.

Color me an american... what store is HMV? Not familiar with it.

HMV and Zavvi both make me laugh, they both share equal space for both formats.

As others have said... woolworths are doing well.

Even my small local store now a Blu-Ray chart section!
It's nice to see

I saw Alien v Predator in HMV Worcester for £30 ($60), nearly collapsed! They had this great big banner saying 3 for 2 on blu-ray, then it turned out to be only the bargain bucket ones with this whitle label on (very few). I just go in, have a look then order them online. Amazon are doing the A v P BD as part of their 3 for 2 anyway.

Woolworths now have a top 20 chart, but on some of the chart entries the same film occupies 2 spots. I'm sure that'll change though!

HMV in Hong Kong is still 50/50. Prices are roughly USD$30-35 for most titles.

In my area: most of the retailers have decreased the shelf space dedicated to HD DVD by 50%-60%. The Best Buys have place all HD DVD's at 30% off, and have increased the shelf space dedicated to Blu-ray. In addition, my BlockBuster store no longer rents HD DVD, and placed all of the HD DVD movies for sale at $14.99.
