well as a guesstimate I would say 12-16 gauge should do just fine, maybe even smaller

You'll definitely be fine for 16 AWG wiring for all those speakers, providing the satellites are within a 60-80ft run.

I wouldn't bother with 12 gauge unless you're getting into 100ft+ runs for your speakers...or if you have floorstanding towers for your rears.

If you are running the wires in walls, run the thickest you can this way if you ever upgrade speakers or amplifier, you won't have to change out the wiring.

I copied a brief section about running wires through your walls and what type it should be based on the NEC 2005. There is a section pertaining to audio/visual equipment. It doesn't cover size but covers type, i.e. penetrating walls and ceilings and plenums.
