NCAA 09 New Features Announced
Bigger Holes, Louder Crowds, Online Dynasties and…Mascot Mode?
By Bill Barnwell

EA's detailed what fans should expect to see with regards to new features in the upcoming NCAA Football 09, the twelfth iteration of EA's college football simulation.

The primary focus of the game appears to be on refining the mechanics of the running game, obviously a more significant part of the college game than in the pros when you consider the prevalence of the option. The game's new Break Away Animation Engine is designed to create more opportunities for guys in the clear to stay there, while the offensive line play has been designed to create bigger holes and larger cutback lanes.

As with college games across all sports, there's going to be a continued focus on making the experience of being in the stadium more authentic, a difficult thing to do without giving the user a beer bong and a university sweatshirt. Either way, the game features a new dynamic crowd system, user-customizable stadium music and sounds, reactions to breakaways, as well as more confusion and difficulty in making changes when the user is playing in a particularly boisterous stadium.

The visuals of those stadiums have been improved as well. Sidelines include more backup players, cheerleaders, and mascots, while the fields are designed to degrade more accurately and look more genuine through new textures and lighting.

The most curious new feature is a new "Mascot Mode", which allows the user to do custom celebrations following a touchdown. No word on whether this will be like Euro 2008, where the celebrations are button combinations, or a Wii control where the mascot responds to your movements. NCAA 09 will also have mascot games, which just sounds wrong.

Finally, there's been improvements to online play that should make NCAA 09 a more exciting online experience; namely, online dynasties and roster file sharing have arrived. No more paying a guy on the Internet $10 for real names. Now, only for love.

Other new features in the game include:

A refined and improved recruiting system

New post-game presentation and play-by-play

Offline cooperative play with up to four players

The ability to return missed field goals

Bluffed play art to prevent people from looking at your playcalls when sitting next to you
We'll report more on these improvements when we see NCAA 09 in person later this month. Until then, we're just going to make inappropriate guesses as to what "mascot games" entail.

One of my Favorite Games! I hope they make it so you can play up to 4 players on a team like the ps2 versions. 60 fps would also be nice! I also hope they tone down the interceprtions too, as passing was somewhat hella hard when you played a good team.

Game ON!

This was one of my favorite games ever...that was until recently. EA Sports has the same list of features every single year. However, they never deliver. Think about all the times the sidelines where supposed to improve of the stadium was going to get louder. Remember when the screen would shake. These are things that don't make the key part of the game better...the fu#&ing gameplay. It is horseshit. The players run like robots the physics engine is the same as the one used on PS2. Unless the update the physics and make it more realistic I will save my $60. I just hope a couple million other fans will do the same to make them finally make an improvement. Does anyone remember when Madden first came out on PS2...it sucked and no one bought it. So the took a year off and came back with Madden 2002 which was an amazing leap from the previous version. There is no reason we can't make them do the same with the current gen game. FU#K EA SPORTS!!!

I love this game and any improvement makes me happy. Im in year 2013 and i still haven't won a national championship so i beleive they made last years a lot harder than the previous year. I cant wait to see what improvements they made to recruiting in 09

This might be the last EA NCAA Football I purchase. I have bought every one of these, beginning with Bill Walsh College Football on the PS1, and every year for a decade the game got better. They added more plays, there was an improvement in graphics, etc, etc... and then came the time when there should have been the most improvement-the highdef era. Much like Madden, these games are completely stale. I can no longer tolerate all five of my o-linemen missing their blocks at least twice a drive. This is compounded by the inability of me to get anyone through the AI line despite the jail-break, 8 man blitz I send. I am so amazed at an AI left tackle coming all the way across the pocket to pick up my safety blitz!

However, the single most frustrating thing is that they do this on purpose. EA isn't stupid! They know that people will buy the game because of the new gimmicks, so they don't feel the need to devote any energy to creating realism in the actual game mechanics. EA had better get it right this time...(I doubt they have).

I've cared less about Madden with each succeeding year but I keep coming back to these. Looking forward to it!

I stopped with NCAA and Madden 05, I have yet to see a new version top those. Since my ps3 is only a month old, I just downloaded NCAA 08 demo the other day, and was not impressed with the game play or graphics. I have very little hope for NCAA 09. Today i still play madden 05. I love it. When i heard the franchise mode sucked cheese on madden 08 on the ps3 i told my self to hold off on it.

I did see that this august they will have Madden 09 Limited edtion which is bundled with HeadCoach 09, and they they will be able to interact with each other. I've heard good things are to come for HeadCoach 09 over the 08 version so I hope this will be a sweet deal.

2007 was the first year since 1999 that I didn't buy Madden or NCAA. I will not buy this franchise again until they make some serious overhaul changes.

I ignored the reviews and bought NCAA 08 and Madden 08 for PS3. Biggest waste of $60 in my entire life. As much as I love the past iterations of these games, I won't be buying into 09 without a demo that proves EA Sports has learned how to make something worth my hard earned cash for the PS3.

I am a big NCAA football fan, and have been buying these games over Madden's in past few years...

that being said they laid a huge egg with last years game, and I will be waiting to see if they got it right this year before I put my money down.

Well I'm not going to get into a pissing match over the best program, but I will say that it looks like the Big 12 is well represented here.
