Newbish audio questions. Help needed.

Ok, with the announcement of the PS3 and DTS HD-MA I'm looking to upgrade my audio system so I'm able to take advantage of these wonderful audio codes I've heard so much about.

Before I get to my questions, let me explain my situation. I am currently still in school, so I still live at home. Now, that I got that out of the way, here are the questions.

Lets say I pick up the Onkyo 605, will my current speakers be able to handle it. (See sig for embarrassing audio set-up) I know it won't be great, but will there be a noticeable difference up from my setup handling DD 5.1? Or will the 605 and the audio codecs be too strong and blow out my speakers?

Another thing is that I live in an apartment and not a house, so I do have one more apartment above me. I know the audio is much clearer, but is it wall rattling loud? Will this get the person above me, and even people in my own apartment mad at me?

The reason I'm asking this is because I would like to grab the 605 first and then pick up a beginner set of good speakers maybe by the summer, or Xmas at the worst case scenario. I will never hear the end of it if I go out and purchase a 750+ dollar Onkyo 905 HTiB, but if I can split it up in two purchases over time maybe it will go over smoother.

All the sounds are clearer w/ lossless audio, so you may actually be able to enjoy movies at a lower volume. Also, "wall rattling loud" would moreso be an effect from the volume at which you are listening. So if people get mad, you just turn down the audio, it's not like you have to switch over to a lossy codec.

Howdy, I'm just a little ways across the bridge from you!

1) Check the ohm rating on your speakers. It'll be on the back of the speaker. You want to make sure it will work with the 605. 6 ohm or 8 ohm.

finally. sounds like a good plan. As long as your speakers work with the receiver you'll be fine. I'm doing this myself at the moment. I'm using my old HTiB while I build another system.

Yeah, the more I read the volume thing, the more I realized how stupid of a question it was it.


I have one more question. I'm looking at the display of the back of the 605 and is there something that I can purchase because I just have the wires that have the exposed metal on the ends and sort of just stick into the hole that you open by pushing a tab. (I'm sure there is a name for that type of input. Noob)

The Ohms on the speakers are 6, so I guess I'm in the clear with that.


EDIT: God, I'm stupid. I zoomed into the picture and it looks like the wire would wrap around and then you would screw it tighter, is that correct?

No worries on the back. they are screw terminals. They accept banana plugs directly in, but you can unscrew them, insert bare wire (or what you already have on there). Just make sure they don't have a chance to touch each other. Screw them back down and nothing to worry about at all.
