Well, being an amateure home theater enthusiast for many of years, I can tell you this question has been asked time and time again. First off, as you obviously are aware, there are three HD resolutions: 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. Some individuals attest they can see the difference between 1080i and 1080p as clear as night and day. Chances are, unless you're sitting directly on top of your Television and starring at your screen intently with an eagle's eye, you most probably can't. As for 720p and 1080i, 720p is a progressive signal where as 1080i is an interlaced signal. At the same time, 1080i is a higher resolution meaning more pixels to show finer detail. As dobyblue so briefly put, if you have a good HDTV chances are it will de-interlace a 1080i signal into a progressive one, so 1080i is you're best bet. Do a google search for "[insert tv brand and model number here] deinterlace" and you should be able to find you're answer. If you're TV does not deinterlace that well, 720p is your best bet. That is, until Sony introduces a deinterlacing feature on the PS3, which in a recent AV Watch interview with SCE engineers about PS3 Firmware we were told "as for 1080 deinterlacing and DTS-HD MA, please look forward to them." In this case, 1080i would be your best bet because even if your HDTV doesn't do a good job deinterlacing the signal, the PS3 will be handling the job, I'm assuming, quite nicely.
If after all this you're STILL not sure... set your PS3 resolution to "Auto" and hope for the best... Hope this has helped... Last edited by aross6; 04-29-2008 at 03:59 PM. |

As there are very few 1080i displays and most that I'm aware of are old sets, i would set it to 720p as that's what your TV is going to display anyways. All about that native resolution. If there's any scaling from other resolutions, the PS3 probably does a better job than your TV.
